@silly_Lilly  Did you uninstall/disable SupportAssist and Dell Update?  That will put an end to those firmware errors.

I assume Dell is in going to fix this issue with SupportAssist, but probably not until its next update.

I received the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update ( Version: 5.5.5.16206 ) on 2/1, but that didn't make any difference.

@ky331  -  Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin isn't the same as SupportAssist or Dell Update. So they need to work on more than just the plug-in....

Thanks for that.  It would be nice for Dell to announce it has been fixed, even i they just tell one prominent member and they report  it here.  Otherwise it's a bit like waiting for the other shoe to drop..........

Dell employee @DELL-Chris M's 13-Jun-2022 post < here> was marked as the solution for that thread and stated that " There will be no notification of any sort. The OTA (over the air) update is going to happen for all Dell remediation services (SupportAssist, Alienware Update, Dell Update)". There was no change to the version numbers of any of my Dell utilities after the OTA update was silently pushed out to my Inspiron 5584 in June 2022 - my UsbUpdate.exe errors simply stopped on their own....

SupportAssist v3.x is currently disabled on my system, and I normally use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x to check for Dell software and driver updates. As a test, I've run a check for updates with Dell Update every day for the past ten days, and I've had a FirmwareTPM.exe error (faulting application path C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\invxxxx_tmp\FirmwareTPM\FirmwareTPM.exe where “xxxx” varies for each each APPCRASH) logged in my Reliability Monitor on seven of those ten days.

As I noted in my 01-Jan-2023 post <above>, I believe the fix will be pushed out as a backend OTA (over the air) update from Dell. If I am correct then the fix will occur silently and there will be no need for users to install an update for SupportAssist or Dell Update. The only way users will know if the problem is fixed is if the FirmwareTPM.exe errors stop, or if someone from Dell actually notifies us that an OTA update has been released.

Hello. I have the same problem with a couple of Dell PC's. Dell Tech Support tell me that they are aware of the issue, which is a bug in the latest version of Dell Support Assist, (3.13.0). They are/will be working on a fix for the problem which may be in the form of a patch to the current version, or included in the next version - given that this is a silent crash with no outward errors, my money would be on the latter. Unless you viewed Windows Reliability Monitor, most people, including me, would not be aware of the issue.  As the problem is with the program itself, uninstalling and reinstalling the same version of Support Assist will change nothing. Just have to sit it out.

Mitch.

Has anyone affected by this issue installed the new SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 (delivered to my Inspiron 5584 today on 08-Feb-2023), and if so has this update fixed your FirmwareTPM.exe crashes? The release notes for v3.13.2 haven't been posted yet at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs so I don't know what bug fixes or known issues are included with this version.  I had a FirmwareTPM.exe APPCRASH the first time I ran a manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" scan with the new  v3.13.2, but since then I've re-booted my system and will continue watching my Reliability Monitor to see if the problem has been fixed.

Win 10 Pro v22H2 Control Panel Dell SupportAssist v3_13_2_14 Installed 08 Feb 2023.png

I first noticed these FirmwareTPM.exe on 19-Nov-2022, which is two weeks before I updated to SupportAssist v3.13.0 (and more than a month after I updated to the previous v3.12.3) so I'm still not convinced this bug was introduced by a change to the actual SupportAssist v3.x programming code.

Last week I was also able to trigger multiple FirmwareTPM.exe errors errors after I disabled SupportAssist v3.13.0 (i.e., by disabling the Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services at Start | Windows Administrative Tools |  Services) and manually launched Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 throughout the week.  This suggests the problem can occur any time a Dell utility performs a inventory of currently installed software and drivers and then queries the backend Dell servers for available updates - see my comments about the Inventory Collector / Dell Inventory Utility at C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\Service\InvColPC.exe in my original post <here>.

I still suspect that this problem has to be fixed by a silent OTA (Over The Air) update like Dell  did for the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\invxxxx_tmp\Executables\UsbUpdate.exe crashes back in June 2022 (see my 01-Jan-2023 post <above>) and hope that the new  SupportAssist v3.13.2 update also pushes out a fix for our C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\invxxxx_tmp\FirmwareTPM\FirmwareTPM.exe crashes.

I'm not convinced that this latest update to Support Assist will include the fix for the TPM issue. The problem was still being investigated a few days ago and any new version would need to be tested before being made available so possibly not enough time for that to happen. I hope I'm proved wrong. How was the new version delivered as I can't see it on my PC?

Hi Mitch1924:

I re-enabled my SupportAssist services and launched SupportAssist v3.13.0.126 manually from my Start menu this morning to run a test (I normally have SupportAssist disabled and only use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x to check for updates) and I was immediately shown a pop-up asking me if I would would like to install a SupportAssist update. I should note that once I clicked the "Yes, Update Now" button it took several minutes for the SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 update to download and finish installing.

The image below was captured back on 24-Jun-2022 when I was using an older version of SupportAssist but it should give you an idea of what the pop-up looked like.

If you launch SupportAssist and go to Options (gear icon in top-right corner) | About to see your current version number that should also trigger an automatic self-update check for a newer SupportAssist version.

I do not have Support Assist installed at all and still receiving random FirmwareTPM crashes.  All I have is Alienware Universal Update 4.8.0.  It crashed on 4.7.1 and 4.7.0, so I'm also not convinced at all that any changes to Support Assist will solve anything.

If I only use Dell Update 4.8.0 to check for updates no TPM fault is registered.  If I then open SA and run Optimise/Tune/Clean Files again no fault is registered.  When I then run Check for Updates on SA, the TPM fault appears on Reliability Monitor.  The fault only started during the first week in January so some update has caused it to begin.

I'm beginning to wonder if the fault is genuine as the TPM status is shown as "Ready" even after the fault is recorded. Also, if the pc is restarted after the fault is shown, I assume the tpm firmware would restart and keep running as long as SA isn't opened again?

Hello, I updated to the latest version of SA,rebooted and ran Dell Update only and the TPM fault was shown. Rebooted again and ran SA but no second TPM fault - I assume the reboot would have restarted the TPM firmware. As far as I can see the update hasn't solved the issue.

I think I will park Dell Update/Support Assist for the time being and check for updates manually on the Drivers and Downloads Web page until the issue is resolved.

Hi Mitch1924:

If I am correct that the crash of C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\invxxxx_tmp\FirmwareTPM\FirmwareTPM.exe is related somehow to Inventory Collector and/or the Dell Inventory Utility at C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\Service\InvColPC.exe then the most likely purpose of FirmwareTPM.exe is to determine the firmware version of your TPM 1.x or 2.x module and then send that information back to Dell for analytical purposes only (e.g., so Dell knows if your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 or can use security features like Bitlocker Drive Encryption). I assume FirmwareTPM.exe is designed to collect information about your TPM firmware version but that it has no impact on the actual status of your TPM module - if the FirmwareTPM.exe executable crashes I don't think it's going to disable your TPM module, it just means that Dell's Inventory Collector can't send telemetry data about your TPM firmware version back to Dell.  However, that's just speculation on my part, based on what little I know about the Inventory Collector.

If I open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter tpm.msc, my TPM Management Console shows I have an Intel (INTC) TPM 2.0 module with firmware version 403.1.0.0, and the status of my TPM 2.0 module is always "Ready for Use" (i.e., enabled), even though I no longer use Bitlocker Drive Encryption on my Win 10 Pro computer.

Hi. Dell have confirmed that the Support Assist update yesterday does not contain a fix for the TPM message issue - that is a few weeks away depending on what is needed to fix it. They also say that the fault logged on Reliability Monitor does not actually impact on the TPM service and status - it seems to be a faulty message which is probably correct as there are no overt issues with the PC. Just have to wait for the issue to be rectified.
