Can someone pls tell what IPMI over LAN is and when it should be enabled?

IPMI over LAN is the ability to establish remote connectivity. The 2900 is IPMI 2.0 compliant, the 2800 is 1.5 compliant. This configuration is done via the BMC .

i have IPMI over the LAN disable and still i can connect to IDRAC remotely, so is this for connectivity for KVM ?? because i am getting connection failed error while connecting kvm, so is that IPMI for remote kvm console connectivity??
