Change BIOS settings without downing server T110 II

I inherited a number of T110 II servers that are spread out over 250 miles of territory.  I noticed that a number of these servers don't turn back on after a power outage, requiring user intervention.  Is there a way to change the BIOS setting that ensures the server is always running when power is supplied without rebooting the machine?  ie - Can I change BIOS settings within the Windows server 2008 OS?

Doesn't seem to be a lot you can do in this. I can only sign into the webserver administrator, and the only option appears to be to terminate the session I'm running.  Tried numerous combinations of my admin password without success.

You need to install OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) and the changes can be made with that software:

http://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER01679890M/1/OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-WIN-7.3.0-350_A00.exe

Download and run to extract, then run C:\Openmanage\windows\setup.exe.  Add yourservernameoripaddress:1311 to IE's Intranet Zone.

The changes may not apply until the system reboots, but given the setting you want to change, that should work.

If you add the site to IE's Intranet Zone, it should log you in automatically using your current credentials (MUST be Domain or Local Admin).  Do NOT change any of the defaults during the OMSA install.

The settings will be under System, Main System Chassis, BIOS, and Information (I think).

Nope, no luck.  I added the site to the Intranet zone and I still get the login prompt.  Nothing seems to work to sign in.  I'm signed into the machine as the domain administrator as well.

I agree - I've run OpenManage before in a ESXi VM and had no issues interacting with the DRAC once I figured out how to get into the application.  Too bad I didn't bookmark it because I've forgotten.  I *know* there's some sort of trick, I just can't remember what it is.

That's just it - there isn't normally a "trick" needed to get it to work. This is OS installed directly on the hardware, right?

Other possible issues ...

  • your system firmware is out of date (and not supported by the latest version of OMSA) - you could update the firmware or try an older version
  • something went wrong with the installation - you could try reinstalling
  • some other software/service/firewall/antivirus may be blocking proper operation

Not sure what else to suggest ... it just isn't that difficult.

Hi Tony,

Curious, which login screen are you having when login? Let me know.

Yes, it's just Windows 2008 server sitting right on the machine.  Not a VM.

Correct.  It's Windows 2008 Server installed right on a T110 II.  Not a VM, nothing like that.

Hi,

To check, the manage mode is it "Manage Remote Node or Manage Local Node"?

It's just right at the bottom of the login screen.

Hi there,

Try click the option below "Manage Web Server" - does it look alike on my screenshot?

Yes, I can click on Manage Web Server, log in on that page with the admin account username / password.  There's nothing useful inside of there, but I can access it.
