Port selection for Async replication

Hi All,

Customer has all 4 ports on the Integrated IO module configured for IP.

I have a couple of questions on picking ports for  async replication over IP and for iSCSI host connections.

- For async replication, do we have to use port #2 on both SPA/SPB, or we can pick any ports?

- Also for async replication, can we use  multiple ports on each SP or only one is allowed?

- in this case, if the customer is to do sync replication, which port is required?

- I assume there is not restriction on which port to be used for iSCSI?

Thanks in advance!

Name Io Module SP Port MTU (Bytes) Speed (Gbps) MAC Address Connector Type
SP A Ethernet Port 2 Integrated SP A 2 1500   00:60:16:A5:2A:9B RJ45
SP A Ethernet Port 3 Integrated SP A 3 1500   00:60:16:A5:2A:9A RJ45
SP A Ethernet Port 4 Integrated SP A 4 1500   00:60:48:52:76:93 LC
SP A Ethernet Port 5 Integrated SP A 5 1500   00:60:48:52:76:92 LC

You can use any physical port for async replication.

- Also for async replication, can we use  multiple ports on each SP or only one is allowed?

You can use LACP/FSN on the port to provide resilience and/or additional bandwidth.

- in this case, if the customer is to do sync replication, which port is required?

Sync replication is done over FC only, and uses the lowest numbered FC port in the array.

- I assume there is not restriction on which port to be used for iSCSI?

No you can use any IP port for iSCSI.  Some ports and modules use iSCSI offload and some do not though, check the Performance Best Practice Guide for information.

Check the replication white paper, most of the above is covered:  https://www.dellemc.com/resources/en-us/asset/white-papers/products/storage/h15088-dell_emc_unity-replication_technologies.pdf

well - there is one restriction

since ISCSI doesnt support link aggregation you cannot use devices with lacp for ISCI

see the Unity NAS capabilities white paper for more info
