How do you enable compression
When I issue the command:
symcfg list -pool -thin -detail -gb
and get the output:
S Y M M E T R I X T H I N P O O L S |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pool | Flags Dev | Total | Usable | Free | Used Full Subs Comp | Shared |
Name | PTECSL Config | GBs | GBs | GBs | GBs (%) (%) (%) | GBs |
------------ ------ ------------ ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---- ---- ---- ----------
EFD_100GB | TEFDEI RAID-5(3+1) | 13757.8 | 13757.8 | 1674.1 | 12083.7 87 22 | 0 | 0.0 |
Legend:
(P)ool Type:
S = Snap, R = Rdfa DSE T = Thin |
(T)echnology:
S = SATA, F = Fibre Channel, E = Enterprise Flash Drive, M = Mixed, - = N/A |
Dev (E)mulation:
F = FBA, A = AS400, 8 = CKD3380, 9 = CKD3390, - = N/A |
(C)ompression:
E = Enabled, D = Disabled, N = Enabling, S = Disabling, - = N/A |
I see a column for 'Comp' and in the legend I see (C)ompression: E=Enabled, D=Disabled, etc...
My question is, how do you enable or disable compression for the pool? Or better yet, can I do it for individual TDEV's?

I'm afraid that is correct.

Hi Droach,
yes you can set it at a device level or a pool level.
To enable compression on the pool
set pool EFD_100GB type=thin vp_compression = Enable
and then at a device level
symdev -sid xxxx -dev compress
all the necessary syntax is in the SE command reference manual

Finbarr.

Thanks for the commands. While doing more research I found this note in the SE Array Management CLI User Guide:
For arrays running HYPERMAX OS 5977, VP compression is not supported, and setting the VP compression attribute and compression start/stop commands is blocked.
Unfortunately, the array I need it on is running 5977. Does this mean the my older 40K VMAX arrays can do compression, but my shiny new 200K cannot?
