Provisioning VMWare RDM LUNs using ViPR
Hi, I have a customer requirement to provision RDM LUNs to an ESXi cluster from an XtremIO array which is behind VPLex using ViPR.
Should I create a new volume from the below menu in ViPR console to create an RDM LUN?
Service Catalog > Block Services for VMware vCenter > Create Volume for VMware

Hi Anandh,
That service in the service catalog will provision a VMFS datastore. If you want to provision an RDM you have two options:
- Use the generic block services category in the ViPR Service Catalog. That will provision the LUN to the ESXi cluster, but you will have to rescan the hosts and attach to whatever VM you want.
- Use the vCO plugin to execute the "Provision Raw Disk (RDM) with EMC ViPR Storage" workflow. This will actually perform all the steps needed to create the LUN, map/mask it, create zones, rescan ESXi hosts and attach to a VM.
Let me know if you have questions

Hi Javier, Thanks for you response.
Can I confirm the generic block services category you mentioned is from the below menu,
Service Catalog > Block Storage Services > Create Block Volume for a Host

Correct, that's the service in the catalog.
