Dell Inspiron 1440 virus software

Does the Dell Inspiron come with factory installed antivirus software?  I just purschased an Inspiron 1440 from Best Buy.  The only one left was "Optimized" by the Geek Squad at a cost of an additional $150.  "Optimized" means they installed virus software and removed "unnecessary " factory installed programs that would slow it down.  I told them I didn't want the Optimization;  they de-optimized it and I bought it.  When I got it home I found there is no antivirus software on the laptop.  Doesn't Dell install antivirus software on their products?

Hi dagrom, and welcome to the forum;

When you buy from Dell directly, they do include time-limited AV software. Personally, I've never been impressed with the products they pre-install. If you don't buy from Dell, all bets are off, as you discovered.

If you have no AV software installed, it is imperative you get protected ASAP. I would recommend you download either
1) the free AV from Alwil, avast! 4 Home Edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
or
2)the free Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx

Both come well-recommended hereabouts. I have used both with no problems. Only install one AV, as running more than one can cause conflicts.
