Redirected searches (primarily to SCOUR)

About 2 or 3 times out of 5 searches, I am redirected to a scour site.

Additionally, three Days ago McAfee found a virus [Generic.dx!ttw]; Windows defender called it [Win32/Opachki.D]. Though both claim to have fixed it, I'm not certain. Yet I have not seen any more indications via scans and have run multiple McAfee and a few Windows Defender all ending without finding anything.

Following is the Hijack scan log:

Hello khuffer and welcome to DCF,

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any malware issues you may have with your system.
  • Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
  • Either print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully, if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
  • Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
  • If you do not reply within 72 hours the thread will be closed, if you need more time let me know. Likewise if I do not respond within 48 hours feel free to PM me.
  • If you have any P2P applications installed such as BitTorrent, uTorrent, Limewire etc etc, please uninstall them before we begin.
  • If you are using Cracked or Illegal software your thread will be locked and all help will cease.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

user posted image Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alernative D/L mirror
Alternative D/L mirror

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 2

Download user posted image OTL from any of the following links and save to your Desktop:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

  • Double click on the icon to run it. Vista and Windows 7 users right click and select Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • In the lower right corner, checkmark "LOP Check" and checkmark "Purity Check".
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them in your reply

Copy and paste OTL Txt and ExtrasTxt in your reply.

Step 3

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

What i`d like in your reply :-

  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • OTL Txt and Extras Txt
  • Log from Security Checks

Hello Kevin and thank you for your help.

Before I list the logs, I want to list a few problems I ran into along the way.

1. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes. During that process McAfee popped up having discovered a trojan which it called, Artemis!8E0EEEC48074, and which it quarantined from C:\Users\Ken\AppData\Local\Tempp\dwm.exe.

2. After Malwarebytes ran it asked me to restart to finish the cleaning. Once my system rebooted I could no longer connect to the internet via IE or Firefox. Firefox suggested that the proxy settings might not be correct. I set the proxy in Firefox to "detect proxy automatically" and it worked fine. I removed the checked "use proxy for you LAN" on IE and it worked fine. I then continued.

3. I will most likely not be able to run lengthy scans until Thursday as I will be busy with work. I will, however, be able to respond to quick questions, and I will do so.

Below is the information you requested.

1. Log from Malwarebytes:

Hiya Ken,

Thanks for the requested logs, Malwarebytes appears to have dealt with all of the infection that was prevalent on your system, OTL logs appear clean.

There is one entry that shows up in the HJT and OTL log -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370

Did you set up that proxy deliberately? research indicates that the proxy could be malicious, can you clarify that point for me please. Your Java is outdated, we need to update that at some point.

Let me know about the proxy, then`ll we`ll progress.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the quick response and your help. I did not set up that proxy. I noticed it when Firefox suggested that the proxy was incorrect (when I could not access the internet after Malwarebyte scan). I checked "determine proxy automatically" on Firefox and unchecked "use proxy" on IE, and I was then able to access internet via either. I do not know if that was the best choice.

Thanks,
Ken

Hello Ken,

Proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only.  Check the box next to the entry listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HiJackThis.  Reboot.

Step 2

Check for proxy server settings in your browser, the following are the most common used.

Internet Explorer:
Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings". ok and apply.

Firefox:
Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection. "No Proxy" should be selected, unless you have one set up yourself.

Chrome:
Select -> Tools menu -> then "Options", then go to "Change Proxy Settings", then "LAN Settings" , then take out the check mark for "Use a proxy server for your LAN" if set, unless you set this up yourself.

Safari
  • Launch Safari
  • Go to general settings menu
  • Then in Preferences/ Advanced
  • Then on line click Proxies change settings ...
  • Click Internet Options, then click the Connections tab, click Network Settings.
  • Disable option (uncheck) for the use of proxy server ...

Step 3

  • Re-open Malwarebytes and check for updates.

Step 4

Run ESET Online Scan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the user posted image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

  • Click on user posted image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the user posted image icon on your desktop.

  • Check user posted image
  • Click the user posted image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check user posted image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push user posted image
  • Push user posted image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the user posted image button.

Hiya Ken,

Looks like ESET has cleaned up the remainder of your problems, proceed as follows please :-

Step 1

Run OTL by double left click, Vista and Widows 7 users right click and select Run as Administrator.
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following from between the dotted lines
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    :OTL
    :Services
    :Reg
    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [ClearAllRestorePoints]

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, if asked to reboot the PC when it is done do so.
  • Post the log that is produced
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Step 2

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version.
For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system.
The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 22.

  • Go to Sun Java
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • In the Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

What i`d like in your reply :-

  • Log fro OTL fix
  • Log from OTL quick scan
  • System review, improvements issues

Kevin,

I realize now that I do not have IE8 64-bit on this machine (this is not the only machine in my house, and I think the last few remaining brain cells I have didn't fire off or something). Anyway, I verified via the Sun Java site that I have the correct version. It's good now. Incidently, it's completely my fault for being behind as I removed that java check from the start-up files. Obviously I am not good at watching for Java updates and will let it stay automatic.

Thanks again,

Ken

Hey Kevin,

Thanks again for your quick response. Sorry it took longer for me to reply this time. I did have a couple issues during the OTL Fix: it crashed twice and windows closed it. I will include event viewer details from the errors. Additionally, I think you meant x64 instead of i586 Java since this machine runs Windows 64-bit. And I made an error too: I updated Java before running the OTL Quick Scan. I hope that I did not make things too difficult!

OTL Fix Log:

Files\Folders moved on Reboot...
File move failed. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

The system is running smooth. In fact, it is running as it did when I got it. I have had no issues on the internet, but I have not searched much either. I am bothered a bit by the OTL crash. Most of all I want to say thank you for your kindness and help.

Hiya Ken,

I`m a bit concerned about the OTL fix not working either. I think its probably down to your security program why it crashed. Lets try a different way of running that fix. We`ll use OTM as follows :-

Please download OTM by OldTimer.
Alternative Mirror
Save it to your desktop. Disconnect from the internet and turn off all security.

Double click OTM.exe to start the tool. Vista or Windows 7 users right click and select "Run as Administrator"

  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [ClearAllRestorePoints]

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If the machine reboots, the Results log can be found here:

c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Post the log from OTM in your reply please. You`ll have had time to surf about, any issues or concerns?

Kevin.

Hey Kevin,

Well I did not have a crash during that scan; so, as you suspected, it was probably McAfee. I probably should find a better program for virus protection and firewall, but I've used McAfee since it was free in the 1990s and it's a hard habit to break (laziness maybe?). Other than the crash I mentioned in the previous post, I have no other issues. I do have a notice of an "important" update (a Windows Live update) and two optional ones, which I will let run as soon as I'm done here. This machine seems to be running fine. I have not been redirected on any searches. If you would like me to run more scans let me know. Lastly, your help has been awesome. Thanks a million!

Ken

Hello Ken,

We don`t need any more scans as such, lets just clean up and set you free. As follows please:-

Step 1

  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop. Alternative mirror
  • Double click user posted image icon to start the program. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big user posted image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

Step 2

To remove the ESET Online Scanner components from your computer, start the Uninstall a Program via Start > Control Panel, select the ESET Online Scanner entry and click Remove. A restart may be required to complete uninstallation.

Step 3

Download and scan with CCleaner

1. Starting with v 1.27.26 (This version no. will differ), CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK " Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 24 hours"
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:

  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies if you want to keep those.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the " Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click " OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click " exit" when done.

Your latest logs are clean and you say that your system is running well, it would be an excellent idea to keep it that way. The following advice will go along way to keeping you secure so that you can enjoy safe and happy surfing.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for malware infection in the future; I strongly recommend that you read them and take them to heart so that you don't have to endure the process of cleaning your computer again.

Make proper use of your antivirus and firewall

Antivirus and Firewall programs are integral to your computer security. However, just having them installed isn't enough. The definitions of these programs are frequently updated to detect the latest malware, if you don't keep up with these updates then you'll be vulnerable to infection. Many antivirus and firewall programs have automatic update features, make use of those if you can. If your program doesn't, then get in the habit of routinely performing manual updates, because it's important.

You should keep your antivirus and firewall guard enabled at all times, NEVER turn them off unless there's a specific reason to do so. Also, regularly performing a full system scan with your antivirus program is a good idea to make sure you're system remains clean. Once a week should be adequate. You can set the scan to run during a time when you don't plan to use the computer and just leave it to complete on its own.

You will have several programs installed, these maybe outdated and vulnerable to exploits also. To be certain, please run the free online scan by Secunia, available Here Before clicking the Start scan button, please check the box for the option Enable thorough system inspection. Just below the "Scan Options:" section, you'll see the status of what's currently processing.... user posted image
...when the scan completes, the message "Detection completed successfully" will appear in the Programs/Result section. For each problem detected, Secunia will offer a "Solution" option. Please follow those instructions to download updated versions of the programs as recommended by Secunia.

Use a safer web browser

Internet Explorer is not the most secure tool for browsing the web. It has been known to be very susceptible to infection, and there are a few good free alternatives:

Firefox,

Opera, and

Chrome.

All of these are excellent faster, safer, more powerful and functional free alternatives to Internet Explorer. It's definitely worth the short period of adjustment to start using one of these. If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer, it would be a good idea to follow the tutorial HERE which will help you to make IE MUCH safer.

These browser add-ons will help to make your browser safer:

Web of Trust warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous ones:

Available for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Green to go,
Yellow for caution, and
Red to stop.

Available for Firefox only. NoScript helps to block malicious scripts and in general gives you much better control over what types of things webpages can do to your computer while you're browsing.

These are just a couple of the most popular add-ons, if you're interested in more, take a look at THIS article.

Here a couple of links by two security experts that will give some excellent tips and advice.
So how did I get infected in the first place by Tony Klein
How to prevent Malware by Miekiemoes
Finally this link HERE will give a comprehensive upto date list of free Security programs. To include - Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall, Antimalware, Online scanners and rescue CD`s.

Please reply so I know you have read this, its been a pleasure to work with you.

Take care,

Kevin
