Task Manager

when i press ctrl-alt-delete to open the task manager, the window dissapears after half  a second. This also happens when i run regedit and when i try to defrag the computer. Is this a virus? How do i access my task manager and stuff? I can only access these things in safe mode.

Try to do the following - IF you fail to be able to do so, it will tell me what virus you have, so I can give removal instructions - if not it will give me the information I need to get you clean. If hijackthis is unable to run, you will have that virus, if not post your hijackthis log for me to check.
========================
A post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
HijackThis From Here
or one of these other links:-

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Then run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste as a reply to this post and an expert with HijackThis Knowldge, will have a go at giving advice. Please note the list of experts names below, very few forum regulars here have had this training.

use 'ctrl/alt/del' to get Task Manager and endtask the following two processes.
c:\windows\system32\vidcntl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\IXPLORE.EXE
DO NOT REBOOT

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

i cannot end the processes you told me to end because i cannot access the task manager, that is my initial problem. When i hit ctrl-alt-delete, the task manager dissapears after less than 1 second. should i go ahead with the rest of the stuff anyways?

Yes try that without the end task - it might come back -if it does I have other tools to let you have to clear it off.

Get the killbox from here - you should not need the bata one - the older one should work.

http://download.broadbandmedic.com/

Extract the files to a folder say called

c:\killbox\

Run the program killbox.exe

and put this file into the 'paste full path of file to delete' box

c:\windows\system32\kbddrv32.exe

then click the 'kill file' button.
==============================
Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Kbddrv32] c:\windows\system32\kbddrv32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Kbddrv32] c:\windows\system32\kbddrv32.exe

Then Reboot and post a fresh log for me to check.

The malware is not running on your machine now, what we may be left with is a setting of some type that is stopping taskmanager from running. (Unless this malware is able to hide from hijackthis).

Try a new reboot, and see if that solves it and post a new log to make sure the malware has not returned.

If it has not and the problem is still there, I will pass a link to this thread to some of my friends to see if they can see what I must have missed.

OK have posted on the boards at BOTH anti-malware schools. We now have 150-200 trying to find that problem, and if I missed something, to make a 'teacher' look small. LOL.

It does not hurt to let them know that teachers are not always perfect.

I will probably be posting back with lots of small suggestions for you to try.

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [AOL Messengar] A0L.EXE

Well, these don't look legit to me

===============================

dah.

Look at the spelling of the word Messengar

===========================

Fix those in hijackthis - all other windows closed

Then find and delete this file in safe mode (F8 at boot)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\A0L.EXE

Post a new hijackthis log and if that has solved your problem.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are:-
------------------------
How on earth did I get infected with all that spyware in the first place? http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=38;t=3051
Also available from here :- http://www.computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html or http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
--------------
Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot s&d, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.
