M18x R2 Windows 8 "Unknown Device"
Hello all, I have a Alienware M18x R2 that is displaying an "unknown Device" in Device Manager.
Here are the specs:
i7 3920
32GB 1600Mhz RAM
2 x GTX 680's
2 x 1TB Western Digital 5400RPM HDD's
1 x 60GB OCZ mSATA HDD
Bluetooth 380
Killer WiFi
Win 8 Pro 64Bit
BIOS version is A09
This particular "Unknown Device" does not appear with a Windows 7 O/S
If I use Windows 7 and install all the recommended drivers there is no problems, the "Unknown Device" in question does not even appear with Windows 7 running, I have done a clean install of windows 7 and checked every device ID in device manager before installing anything else to see if I could find the one causing the problems in Windows 8 - It is no where to be found
As soon as I Install Windows 8 and check the device manager, then this particular "Unknown Device" appears again, even after installing all Windows 8 recommened drivers it is the only "unknown" left.
I have tried searching the internet using the Hardware Vendor ID and Device ID provided in the details section of the "Unknown Device" but cannot find one useful entry, even using the Vendor and hardware databases has been a waste of time
Here is the Device hardware ID as it appears, three lines in total, but I think only the top one is relevent.

Any help would be great.

It would be nice to get a response from one of the Dell reps on this forum considering the money we have both spent on these machines, I expect the new Precision M6700 is just as expensive as the Alienware M18x R2

I agree. I think the driver set for Windows 8 is not quite ready for these models. I did find a solution though. Check out this post:

I had to edit the INF file to reflect the PNPID for the system, but it works in my automated install.

Someone said it came up in Windows 8 Update (check the optional updates).

An old thread I know, but the missing driver is the 'airplane mode switch' driver. It is also found on the Latitude E3540.
