Upgraded old Inspiron 9300 to Window 8 - Lost Audio Drivers
I upgraded an older (circa 2005) Inspiron 9300 laptop from XP to Windows 8 (and later 8.1), but I lost all sound. I looked at the Device Manager and there is no driver. I looked for a new driver to the Multimedia Audio Controller, but it doesn't find anything with the automatic search. I tried looking and can't find a driver for this laptop and Windows 8 or 8.1, and trying to figure out my next steps. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

I looked on that site you referred and the code shows it as Intel because of 8086 on the Hardware IDs. "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_01891028&REV_03
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_01891028
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&CC_040100
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&CC_0401"
I tried to install the Intel utility for Windows 8, but it didn't do anything. (Do I need to uninstall the current Multimedia Audio Controller first?)
I still have the same error and it doesn't automatically find any drivers to update the Multimedia Audio Controller. I appreciate the previous help and any other ideas are greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I'll have a laptop with no sound, but I've seen that others on Youtube have updated Windows 8 or 8.1 on these old Inspiron 9300.
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There are no compatible drivers for this device. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."

Try to install SIGMATEL STAC 975X AC97, v.5.10.0.4255, A03:
http://ftp.dell.com/audio/R99254.EXE
If it doesn't work installing directly then install via the device manager following the instructions here:
