Hi PeterSt,
Before upgrading to Windows 8 on XPS 8500, please ensure that the following steps are performed:
Update the BIOS version to A09 from the link mentioned below:
Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved
ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00843363M/1/A09.EXE
Now, before uninstalling any application or drivers as instructed by the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor, download the following drivers:
DW 1703 WLAN + BT Win 8 Driver: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00685045M/3/DW1703_W84_A00_Setup-C2YWP_ZPE.exe
Intel USB 3.0 XHCI: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00306237M/1/USB3.0_Intel_W74_A00_Setup-9J21D_ZPE.exe
Intel IME update: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00699393M/1/ME_Intel_W84_A00_Setup-CR1H4_ZPE.exe
Intel Chipset: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00685042M/3/Chipset_Intel_W84_A00_Setup-89J9Y_ZPE.exe
Intel Rapid Storage: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00703949M/3/RST_Intel_W84_A00_Setup-W2JXP_ZPE.exe
AMD Video Driver: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00749652M/3/GFX_A00-00_8.982.12_G1MJ2_Setup_ZPE.exe
Sound Driver: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00685039M/3/Audio_Realtek_W84_A00_Setup-XK1WP_ZPE.exe
Dell Digital Delivery: ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER00619277M/15/DellDigitalDelivery.2.2.2000.0_Install_ZPE.exe
Now, uninstall the applications as instructed by Microsoft Upgrade Advisor. To uninstall the applications, go to > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall.
After uninstalling all the old drivers and applications, install the latest ones that were downloaded. Bios Update is critical.
Once all the updates are performed, you can proceed with the Windows 8 upgrade. Once Windows 8 upgrade completes, please perform a windows update to complete the up-gradation process.
Note: In case you are not able to click on the links, then copy and paste the link in your computer's browser.
Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Appu, I have updated the bios to A09, which seemed to go ok. Then tried the
drivers 2 of theses would not install
Chipset_Intel_W84_A00_Setup-89J9Y_ZPE
& ME_Intel_W84_A00_Setup-CR1H4_ZPE
I used Driver Genius Professional Edition to scan and update the rest.
driver genius is telling me there are no further updates using their 28thh
October data base. Have you any other thoughts the W8 upgrade assistant is
still showing the same errors as below, or should I stay with W7
Regards
Peter

You should update they drivers after installation of Windows 8. They work fine on my XPS 8300 (although they are for the 8500).
