Windows 8 Sleep Problem - Can't disable it

I recently updated my Studio 1458 Notebook from 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro.  It is a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-520M, 8 GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066 MHz RAM, 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 Video Card, 500 GB SATA @7200 RPM HDD.

Since upgrading, I have had no control over the Sleep function.  I have changed all settings I can find on CONTROL PANEL

Has anyone else had this issue with Windows 8?  Any suggestions?

Hi Daquinoh,

It seems to be an issue with the video drivers. I would recommend you to download and install the driver in compatibility mode. Here is the link http://dell.to/RE6YcX .

To install the driver in compatibility mode:

  • Right Click the driver installation file and select Properties -- > Compatibility Tab.
  • Select Windows 7 from the list in the following image

  • Click Apply -- > OK
  • Right Click the file and select the 'Run As Administrator' to install the driver

The 'Dell Product Group' team has not tested this system with Windows 8. The drivers will not be available for this system. You can refer to the link for a compatible system tested by Dell with Windows 8 http://dell.to/RnDAFu

Please reply if you have any questions.

Thank you for your prompt answer.  I installed the driver, yet the problem persists.  Please let me know if there are any other known possibilities of fixing the issue.

Hi Daquinoh,

Thank you for your response. I would recommend you to check the computer in BIOS.

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, tap F2 on the Dell logo
  • Once you are on the BIOS screen, please wait on the screen for few minutes and check if you face the same issue

Alternatively, run the diagnostics on the computer to check the hardware functionality:

To run the ‘Dell Diagnostics’

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, press F12 on the Dell logo
  • Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu
  • Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT

Please reply if you have any questions.

I have an Inspiron 2305 that had the same issue. I saw on a MS support site about the Fast Access facial recognition causing the issue. I disabled it and it solved my problem. This was after hours on the phone with MS technical support. Hopefully this will solve your problem as well. This is a Dell exclusive feature so I hope they correct quickly.
