Can't start XP from hard drive or CD

Hi all,

AM trying to start XP on my Dimension 2400 so that I can get my data off before I reformat. Have tried most things that I have read here but to no avail. Have tried to repair, reinstall, etc. The thing just hangs. It got very slow after freezing on Sunday night and now appears to not want to do anything. Currently searching for previous verions of Microsoft Windows, or in this case that is the screen being displayed and nothing else happening.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regards

Greg

If you can boot from the XP CD then try a Parallel Install , ie: Install another Windows OS on the same partition as existing Windows XP OS.
Rename the Windows Folder to say  Windows1 during procedure.
See this link for large picture & text of procedure;
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdparallell/index.htm

To collect old data you will probably have to take ownership of File/Folder , so see Microsoft info;
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Product=winxp
Must use Safe Mode for XP Home.
