Easy CD Creator

I have a 4550 P4 2.66ghz with 1 gb memory and a Nvidea GeForce 5700 256mb AGP card. The original XP OS has been upgraded to SP2 with all updates. I have had difficuties with my Easy CD Creator 5.2 basic which I had updated all software updates from the Roxio web site so that I could burn CD's and DVD's. I decided to uninstall the software and start again and this is where my problem starts. When I run the Dell Roxio EasyCD Creator 5.2 Basic installation disc it shows a message telling me that it is not compatible with the following message: "Easy CD Creator 5 is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, contact Roxio, Inc..". If I click on the details box nothing happens! Where do I go from here? Shaun

When you get that message click on the option to continue and install Roxio, but DO NOT run Roxio.  Restart Windows and then install the updates from Roxio, restart Windows again and you should be back in business.  I've had to do this on several customers PC's to get the Version 5 installed.

Version 5 is so old I don't think it's supported anymore. I think you can get an update to one that is. Check here:

Right, I have re-installed EasyCD Creator 5 Basic and installed the following updates in this order: 1 - ecdc_v5.3.5.10_basic_enu.exe - Updates Easy CD Creator 5.x.x Basic and Starter Kit to 5.3.5 (This update will install Windows XP specific drivers and make the necessary registry entries to allow Easy CD Creator to operate correctly in Windows XP.) 2 - driveup5.3.5v.exe - Drive Update for Easy CD Creator Platinum 5.3.5.10v (This Web update will add drive support for CD/DVD burners that were released after the release of Easy CD Creator 5.3.5.) I re-started the computer after each and every installation. When I run the program I get the following error message: Easy CD Creator Engine initialisation has failed : (could not load CDR4). The program then loads but does seem to recognise either the CD or DVD writers. I can run the data transfer tests from the program so something is being recognised! What happens now? Shaun

Do not reboot between installing the program and the updates, even though it tells you to. Install all, then reboot.

There is also another Dell update that you can install after the Roxio ones:

Hmm, did that and still ended up with the same message as above. I did a complete uninstall and a Regedit to remove any orphan registry entries (and there were quite a few!) and then installed as suggested with the Roxio updates and the Dell update with no re-boot in between. Seems this is a bit of a tickler. Shaun

My suggestion has worked on several Customer's PC's with XP SP2.  There are also reports back from users on this forum that it worked for them too.  Not sure why yours is not working.

You may have to run "roxizap.exe" to get rid of Roxio and start over.  I'm not sure where to get the roxizap.exe but it used to be available on their web site.

OK, I think we are there. I have uninstalled ECDC 5, downloaded and run roxizap.exe and re-booted. Pinnacle Studio had a problem with the driver on re-boot but repaired itself upon request. I then installed ECDC 5 from the Dell disc, ran the updates from Roxio and then the update from Dell to version 5.3.5.17. After running all the updates I re-booted and ran ECDC 5 and voila, working at last. Thank you all for your perseverance in helping me out here. I did lose heart a couple of times but the need to backup my all important Family History and Money files kept me going. Right let's see if we can backupo all those photos and other items of interest so patiently researched and stored away for safe keeping and easy access!! Shaun

Well, as it happens, I am running Nero 6 Ultra as well. However, this tells me that there is a known compatibility problem on startup. It seems to run OK. However, I find it a little irritating having to choose the DVD or CD at the start of the process and have got used to ECDC over the years. I do find Nero faster than ECDC. Shaun

Although V5 works, consider upgrading to a newer version, either Nero or Roxio as there have been many fixes and improvements.    I have both on my PC as I do PC support, but I use Nero Ultra V7 for all my CD and DVD burning.

There can be conflict issues if you have two "packet writing" programs installed on a PC.  e.g. Roxio "direct CD" and Nero "InCD".   If you have both of these installed, uninstall one of them and see if that helps.

I don't like the DirectCD type programs/utility. I like my CDs to be readable when I look at them on standard computers and stay with bog standard data cd's and DVDs. I did not install Roxio DirectCD. Shaun

I don't use the packet writing programs or CD-RW discs, either.  This is the most unreliable way of CD Burning.  RW discs have been known to lose format and/or data.  If it's worth putting on a disc I use a CD-R, they are relatively cheap.

So far I have been lucky with CD-RW. Even then, when I am backing up my MS Money files I do use CD-R until it's full and then start again. I just wish that MS supported CD backup natively from within the program. Shaun

I'm currently using a USB memory "key" for money backup.  Money also backs up on the hard drive so there's two backups.

Yes, it does automatically backup to the hard drive. But, when that crashes so does the backup. Even so, it is useful and very quick. I have always used the floppy (MS compresses the data) and archived my accounts each year onto CD-R as well as HD. In the latest version of MS Money, the usefullness of the floppy is reduced. In previous versions it would overwrite the files on backup but in the latest version it does not, so you have to erase the files before you use the floppy as it will only hold enough data for one set of files (or at least it does with my accounts). Apparently MS disabled the overwrite capability so that you would not destroy your existing backup before writing the new backup. They argued that you should be using several floppy discs to store backups on and then just delete the oldest one when doing a current backup. Shaun
