Failure to log in?

I have a Inspiron 5160 running Win XP SP2 and when the machine has booted to the log in screen the mouse pointer stays at arrow and doesn't highlight the profile icons (finger pointer) so it wont log on to any account.

After restarting it will work but ideally I would like to log in first time round so would love to fix this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Frosty11,

This is a fairly common occurence when XP resumes after going into hibernation and encounters a corrupted memory snapshot.  If on restart you are presented with an option to "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu." then do so.

You might also go to Control Panel and review your Power Options.  I've seen the problem occur when the settings were not realistically configured; i.e., hard drive turns off before monitor.

Thanks for the info however this issue is from a fresh (cold) start up and not hibernation but I will play with the power options and tweak abit to see if it effects it.
