How to perform a "Non-Destructive Recovery" on Dimension 5100 running XP-MCE
Could someone talk me through how to perform a non-destructive recovery to try and resolve a problem I'm having with MCE? Thanks.

I will attach a summary provided by a Media Center expert @ Microsoft who suggested I try first running a non-destructive recovery and, if that doesn't work, either it is hardware or I'm in need of a destructive recovery.
---------------
********************** The message for you follows ************************
Hi Tyler,
My name is Mike Fraser, I am a Support Professional here at Microsoft; and we
spoke earlier today. Since we were not able to fix your issue, I will be
closing this case as "not resolved" as I have already confirmed with you.
The following is what we were able to accomplish today:
ACTION: When trying to burn a DVD you will get a "Create Failure"
RESULT: Unable to burn DVD's from within Media Center
CAUSE: Unknown for now. It could be file corruption or registry corruption or
defective hardware as you are unable to use the DVD burning feature's with in
Windows (using the explorer for example) Windows uses the Sonic engine as well
but different modules.
STATUS: A short rundown of the things we have tried to get it working again:
- We tried installing the SonicEnconder, same error after doing this.
- Checked the log files, couldn't find any error's related to this specific
issue.
- The hotfix KB94553 didn't go in because the ident didn't match
- We changed the ident in the registry from 4.0 back to 3.1
- Now we are able to install the hotfix, this did not resolve the issue.
- We Re-installed the Microsoft .NET framework 1.1, did not resolve the issue.
- Checked for 3rd party Upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry, not
present.
- Tried a different brand of DVD media, same issue.
From this point there is not much then we can try. You might want to perform a
non-destructive recovery if offerd, if this fails a destructive recovery is the
only option left (remember to backup your data). If after a destructive recovery
the issue still exists we might be dealing with a hardware
issue.

...because you didn't order it with the computer. Nonetheless you should be able to get one for no charge. Contact Dell at one of the links in this post and request an XP reinstallation CD.

Thank you for your help. I received the Windows CD and performed a recovery install.
I received several errors when I did this. One read:
ngen.exe -- Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point GetRequestedRunTimeVersion could not be located in the dynamic link library mscoree.dll
However, I was able to boot to windows and do several things.
My original problem was with Media Center and DVD burning capabilities (see above). After the reinstall, I get errors constantly in MC and I cannot do anything in My TV.
Critical Process Failure
A critical Media Center process has unexpectedly failed. If problems persist, please restart your machine and try again, or contact technical support. Code 3.
When I go to Settings to reprogram TV, I get this message:
Tuner Not Found
The tuner hardware is either malfunctioning or not installed. Please ensure tha tboth the tuner hardware and a valid tuner hardware driver are installed.
Also receiving:
Component Registration Failure
Some of the files needed to play radio or video are missign or corrupt. Media Center component registration may have failed.
Help please :)

I have XPS GEN 5 with Media Center Extender and have had the same errors. I believe them to be related to the latest MS update of something called NET Framework.
Did you recently do a Windows Update?
I had this problem before (believe some of this was a fix to the Windows Registry or editing this Framework file) but do not remember where I found the fix. Plus this might be a different fix to this. Has anyone written a script to do the work. I think there were several steps in editing and typing.
