Profile corrupted?

I recently purchased and installed a Dell Vostro 220 desktop (Windows 7), establishing a user name and password in the process.  I then opened the PC and had no problem using my user name and password to enter and use the PC.  Subsequently, I transferred the contents of an old computer (Windows XP) to the new computer, using the prescribed Belkin Easy Transfer cable and utility.  Thereafter, I could no longer open the new PC.  The error message says "profile cannot log on" or words to that effect, suggesting that the transfer of settings and data from my old PC may have corrupted the profile I established under the new PC. What can/should I do now to remedy the situation? Pls be specific or refer me to a step-by-step source as I am only an "intermediate" (not Advanced) PC user.  Thanks!
