Re-install Windows 7 - no programs installed

My hard-drive died. The laptop was under warranty so Dell sent a technician out to my house to replace the hard-drive, but his services did not include re-installing everything.

So we did the Windows 7 Re-installation and the Drivers & Utilities DVDs so Windows is working BUT none of the factory installed programs are on it - i.e. Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office Starter, etc.  How do I get these?

Also, the computer has nothing on the desktop - it didn't have a short cut to my computer or anything like that.  Literally the only thing on my desktop is Recycle Bin.

Hello Bnritz,

There are few important point I would like to share:

1. All the factory shipped software can be installed from My Dell Downloads. You can find the software such as Roxio, Webcam Central, Acrobat Reader etc.  Please click here to follow the detailed onscreen instructions.  My Dell Download works only on Internet Explorer. You may also refer the FAQs on My Dell Downloads. However Microsoft Office Starter once lost cannot be re-installed as Dell does not retain any copy of it.

2. To get "Computer" icon on the desktop, click Start, right click Computer, and select the option "Show on desktop".

3. For the shortcut icon to the software's installed: Click start; Right click the program for which you want an icon on the desktop; Select the option send to "desktop (create shortcut)". You may perform these steps for any shortcut icon you prefer to have on the desktop.

Please write back if you have any further questions, would be glad to assist you further.

Do you have any installation disks for the purchased software? You can download acrobat reader from adobe, but there should be disks for microsoft office starter. If you don't have them, go to the dell software download center (support.dell.com/.../ddc) and use your service tag to find out what downloads they have for your computer. Also check "my dell downloads" (smartsource.dell.com/.../Welcome.aspx). Any software that you purchased from dell should be there.

See Windows Reinstallation Guide for more Information:

Microsoft Office Starter cannot officially be downloaded and is kind of obsolete (replaced by Microsoft Office Web Apps). See here for a comparison:

If you still want it the unofficial links I used to recommend are down but the link Mary G recommends in this thread here seems to still work:
