Unable to Access Home Network After Fresh Install of XP + SP2...

This has been driving me nuts for months, but I'm just now able to find time to address it.

After I tried installing SP2 as an upgrade and it hosed my laptop, I took the popular advice and made a clean install of XP and then installed SP2 (both from a CD I got from Microsoft and through Windows Update - I tried this several times).

While I really like some of the features of SP2, the one thing it did that has really frustrated me is prevented me from connecting to my home network. This happened both on my Inspiron 8600 laptop and on my custom-made desktop. Both systems recognize that the network is present, but I am unable to create a connection. (Mind you, I had a functioning network for a year prior to this - I'd never had a problem with creating the network and connecting to it before SP2).

I ended up reinstalling XP SP1 on my desktop and one partition of my laptop. I was rather hoping I'd find a resolution to this problem and wanted to have one functioning SP2 partition, so I left my main partition as SP2. Sadly, I can't seem to find anyone else who has this problem.

I can create the network fine from either my laptop or my desktop. But when I try to connect to the other, I get this error message:
\\Nightfall-25 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.
I had never seen this until SP2. Anyone else seen it or, better yet, have a solution? I really want to be able to use the network again!

Thanks.

Something may be trying to connect to http://www.nightfall-25.com/ . . . and I guess that the SP2 firewall is blocking it . . looks like some radio thing.

If you can kill whatever is doing that, your connection may be available

Sorry, I should have made this clearer: \\Nightfall-25 is the name of my laptop. Nightfall-25.com is a website that I run and which is unrelated to the problem I am having.

My Mate downloaded the SP2 Packs and now he cannot even log on to his PC.  It loads the login screen but when he actually logs in it instatly logs him back off.  As you can't get to the settings on the PC there is really no way I can think to sort this problem so I suggested to him re-installing XP but again I don't know how to do this.

Can some one help as its driving me crazy!!!

Many Thanks

Well, I managed a resolution to the problem: DON'T UPDATE WITH SP2, INSTALL FRESH!

I reinstalled XP Pro simultaneously on my laptop and desktop, ran all the updates, then installed SP2 and voila! I had a network. Didn't have to make any adjustments to it at all.

Go figure.

In the future it's a good idea to post your own problem to a new thread; tagging on to an existing thread gets everyone confused.

Your mate could try uninstalling SP2 using the Recovery Console in this link:

Sometimes this procedure goes badly causing a loss of data; a backup of your important stuff may be in order.

Here's Denny's trailer to the Supersite re-install directions.
