Windows 7 - Latitude D530

I purchased two Latitude D530's from The Dell Outlet last year both without operating systems and have since been using XP Pro (Retail) on both.

In view of the generaly favourable comments on the Windows 7 beta I'm thinking about upgarding to this OS and taking advantage of the pre-release sale price which expires here in the UK on Sunday.

BUT I'm not sure if Windows 7 will be supported by Dell for the D530 as production of the machine ended at the end of last year.

The machine is currently Vista supported and I'm wondering if Dells Vista drivers would be compatible with Windows 7.

Can anybody advise me about this please before I part with and maybe waste my money?

Cheers...Colin

I installed Windows 7 RTM x64 on a Dell Latitude D530.

All works fine except :

- I can't install QuickSet. It is impossible to change the screen brightness.

- I also installed a new HDD Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB which makes a clickin noise. Dell released an update for all smaller drives, but not yet for the 500GB.

I found a version of QuickSet that looked compatible with Windows 7 on D530.

I installed it on my D530 and it worked for a few days. But now, it does not work anymore.

I still see the bar graph indicating the brightness, but the screen brightness does not change anymore.:emotion-39:

says to use windows vista drivers and it should work...

i tested, and all but quickset worked...the brightness was like, dull when not plugged into the charger, and when i tried changing it(drivers installed) it didnt work...=(

As far as speed, and other compatability issues, it all checked out fine..

and im happy i purchased windows 7

I am having the exact same issue (Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit).  QuickSet for Vista loads and works for all else, but brightness.  Status bar moves with Fn Up/Dn but screen stays at BIOS preset brightness.

BEGIN RANT:

I have seen many Dell issues described on these boards.  I never see the moderators answer them, generally what we end up with is an unsolvable problem that several people agree is a problem but no help from Dell.

I like Dell products (I own 2) but their Tier 3 problem resolution is non-existant.

That's because these are "community"/user - user forums, not official tech support forums :emotion-55:

As such, the forums should NOT be considered a place to have questions answered/problems solved by Dell.

Although Dell reps do occasionally find time to answer the odd question on the forums, they're not obliged to do so, and  *shouldn't* be criticized by anyone for not doing so!

Email, telephone, and 'Live Chat' are the only official support options.

I have a final resolution to the screen brightness issue.

I have just had a heated 'discussion' with Dell support reps over this issue.
Initially they said that even though the D530 is Windows 7 compatible, that was a designation by Microsoft, not Dell, and they didn't support it. They said I should go back to Vista (Noooooooooooooo!).

Anyway, you will need the below files to work. I haven't been able to find any Windows 7 drivers for the D530 on the Dell website, which is rather poor form. I had to threaten/cajole the drivers out of them.

Video Drivers:
For Windows 7 32 bit:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/INTEL_GM965-EXPRESS-CHIPSET-_A01_R256481.exe

For Windows 7 64 bit:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/INTEL_GM965-EXPRESS-CHIPSET-_A01_R256482.exe

Latest QuickSet:
Win7 32-bit:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R180762.exe

Win7 64-bit:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R182249.exe

That will restore the Fn+(up/down) functionality.

Let me know how it goes....

Hi, generally speaking Windows Vista drivers work for most of Dell products that still dont have genuine Windows 7 drivers - and im not talking just about laptops, guys.. we could easily install Windows 7 even on OptiPlex GX520/GX620 series..

as for the laptops, the biggest trouble and headache is usually QuickSet application. I found out in other post a link to an older version of QuickSet that DOES NOT detect OS version.. it worked beautifully on my Dell Precision M65 - Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit with Beta SP1

Most files exist on both HTTP and FTP servers, but this particular link to the HTTP server does not seem to work, so try the FTP server - which works for me:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R166702.EXE

Just a note:  Dell does not develop and test drivers for operating systems available after the system stops shipping.  If the system didn't ship with a particular OS, then Dell won't issue drivers for it.  When it was said that the drivers were "cajoled" out of Dell support, it is not like Dell support gave up the top secret driver files that Dell refuses to make public ... they simply found and provided drivers for computers that happened to have the same devices or similar devices found in them that did ship with Windows 7.  They did the leg work that is your responsibility if you want to install an unsupported (which we now know is simply untested) operating system.

This thread is 3 years old and will be locked due to age.

However just in case, here are some unofficial driver sets I've listed for Windows 7 32 Bit and many of the Latitude D Series Laptops:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/4544.latitude-d-series-windows-7-unofficial-drivers.aspx

Use these alongside my Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 7:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

If you need assistance with a driver set or setting up Windows 7 please state your model number and version of Windows you wish to install in a new thread on the Microsoft OS Forum.
