XP Media Edition

In the past, I reformatted my PC and re-installed the OS furnished by Dell. During installation, I received a message in a big white/orange box, saying your applications are being updated, do not press any key or interrupt this process. I'd like to know what is being installed during that, and is it able to be bypassed? The process took an additional 15 or so minutes.

Than you

Although it says "your" applications, they're actually applications required by the OS.

As such, they can't be - nor should they be, bypassed.

Let me ask you this. Since I believe "unnecessary" applications are being added on to this already "resource hog" OEM version of XP, am I able to install a retail version instead of it? My system, by no stretch of the imagination , is not top of the line, not even close. However, just having the one game open that I play, is PIII choppy slow, quite sick really, and there's no way that should be happening.

Thank you for your time,
