I think the specifications of your system is like it :Processor speed2660 MHz and RAM 512 MB. If its true, installing windows 7 on it, will decreased the speed of your system a lot. Windows 7 needs at least 1GB RAM.

I didn't go through all the unnecessary info. Dell supports both Vista 32 bit and Vista 64 bit so you should be OK with the Vista drivers for Win7. Win 7 is basically "Vista improved". XP support has come to an end. They will still issue some security updates but that's all. Win 7 will keep you current with new software, however, if you are not planning on any new software it would seem optional if you want Win 7. Keep in mind some older software MAY not run in Win 7, even in a compatibility mode. Also, you will lose Outlook Express, if you use this, for e-mail Windows 7 does not come with an e-mail program but you can download the free Windows Live Mail program from Microsoft (Outlook Express is history).
I have an E510, which is from the same era as your PC. It has Vista 32 bit, but I won't invest any addtional $$ into Operating Systems or even hardware as the hardware is "old technology". One of the issues upgrading older systems to new Operating Systems is that the new OS is designed for the current technology hardware.

The main problem for installing windows 7 is RAM. If your RAM us 3 GB, you can install windows 7 because your CPU can handle it without any problem. I have seen many system with slower harware than yours, with windows 7 and their windows works fine.
