Unfortunately, the only PCIe 2.0 slot in the 435MT is the x16 graphics card slot. All the rest are PCIe 1 (and single x1 lane), as I noted in my previous link. You'll get better performance with the native SATA II.
Have this machine - running Windows 10 booting from a SSD. Have used both RAID (just a single disk - no RAID0 or RAID1) and ATA modes. My experience (and workarounds for RAID mode issue) on Dell's forums here. Machine is currently running Windows 10 version 1903.

If this system is a Studio XPS 435MT with a RAID setup you may want to read this entire thread: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/Studio-XPS-435-MT-parts-replaced-drives-show-incorrectly/m-p/7260786
Basically before upgrading to a SSD I believe you will need to break (disable) the RAID setup using Intel RST.

This post works for SATA SSDs, as well as M.2/NVMe SSDs.

I'm considering using PCIe 2.0 1x adapter card for SSD 3 upgrade, though have heard it improves little over SATA 2 speeds.
Anyone comment on actual install results with this?

If it doesn't have a SSD yet (as bootable C: ) install that ...
... and just run off of motherboard's SATA-2/300 . It will still be about 3 times faster than any spinning-platter HDD.
Isn't this machine like 9 years old ? Take that little SSD with you when you finally get a new machine next year.

New machine next year? I'm just getting started with this one.
