XPS 8930, 32GB Intel Optane upgrade

I just ordered a brand new XPS 8930 and I want to buy an Intel Optane Memory with 32GB.

According the the PDF that I find on the Dell website, only 16GB are supported.

Can anyone tell me if they were able to install a 32GB Optane Memory?

Thanks!

Hi, @martin_b76

Can I ask what sort of Hard Drive you are ordering, within the new XPS 8930?

If it is a SSD (that uses the M2 NVMe slot) then I think that you are unable to add the Optane memory (as that uses the M2 NVMe Slot & I believe that there is only one M2 NVMe Slot in total)!

John-Jay is correct, there is only one M.2 NVMe slot. The main advantage of Intel Optane memory combined with HDDs is to increase performance of HDDs, but that does not beat a standalone SSD. With current SSD prices and only one M.2 NVMe slot. I would choose a SSD. To increase HDD performance I would consider SSD caching of the HDD or replacing the HDD with a SSD.

Thanks @Vic384 and @John-Jay

I wasn't aware of that. I do have a SSD as my main boot drive and I was thinking I could have a Optane drive on top of that to support my HDD that comes with the configuration, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Thanks for the clarification!

Welcome to the Dell Community  @martin_b76

With the setup you describe you would not want or need IOM.

Your SSD  should be for booting and Apps. "Games"

Make sure the HDD is set as the "Default" storage device.

If the HDD was an SSHD you would be set.
