XPS 8930, GPU upgrade, GTX 1080 Ti? #3

Hey guys,

I have an XPS 8930 with i7-8700 and GTX 1070 in it. I was just wondering if it is possible to put a GTX 1080 Ti in this machine or not? I am not sure if it has to be a Dell part or not? I would appreciate any input.

Thanks!

The answer is yes, but it is worth finding someone who has successfully done it and what brand they used.  I have an EVGA 1070ti in mine and it works great.  I couldn't get a Gigabyte 1070 to work at all.  Dell only sells up to a 1080 OEM on their website, but I found them for sale with a 1080ti from an online retailer.  If you want to run it at full speed and overclocked you will probably want to upgrade your power supply to 650 watts or better.

With Class 3 Bios only OEM hardware works.  There is no Secure Boot OFF mode and therefore no other hardware works.  The other issue is that the power supply would need to be updated as 460W isn't enough.

CLASS 2.3.1 bios has secure boot disable and CSM.

CLASS 3 bios has no csm.
It's not that a 1080 wont work  it may NOT WORK IF it has CLASS 3 BIOS.

It has NOTHING to do with a 1080 or 1070 or 1060 or 1050 or 1030 or ANY card other than DELL OEM versions with CERTIFICATE FROM DELL BLESSED BY SECURE BOOT in the video card bios.

Non dell cards would require SECURE BOOT OFF, Legacy CSM ON, Legacy Option Roms ON.

RE: XPS 8930 - Video Card Help Needed

We can close this.  Dell Support tells me that they don't support installing any other video cards than the ones they sell."

CSM and CLASS 2.31 VS 3CSM and CLASS 2.31 VS 3

I don't think the 450 watt psu is high enough for that.

With a 450w PS, I wouldn't even be comfortable running a Intel i7-8700 and Nvidia GTX-1070.

Red-lining these Power-Supplies for months and years is a recipe for disaster. When a PS dies, it's often pretty spectacular ... it often takes-out the motherboard and/or GPU.

It is possible, I have done it with the GTX 1080ti from EVGA with my old XPS 8920, but I had to switch the stock PSU for a stronger one, in my case, one Corsair TX 750W. Nvidia suggest at least 600W PSU for a system with a 1080ti.

By the way, today I have a XPS 8930 and I am waiting a GTX 1080ti founders edition to be delivered, to put it on the system.

I recommend to go with blower style GPUs, since the XPS don't have good internal ventilation, this way the hot air is expelled by the GPU to the back of the case.

By blower type I assume all the hot air is channeled out the back. I agree that the 8910, 20, and 30 don't have good ventilation and I plan to do a post with pics  next week on adding a 120mm fan in the front of my 8920.

I just put in an RTX 2060 and it worked fine. Although I messed with the BIOS previously, installed Windows 10  onto an NVMe SSD. My model originally came with the 1050Ti

The XPS 8930 comes with 460W PSU and I upgraded my DELL's GTX1060 to my EVGA GTX1080 SC2 no problem at all which uses the 6+2 pin power cable. The length has plenty room left with 2" spare. Only thing is the swingout PSU is heavy and does not completely lock fully thus making the side-panel a bit awkward to refit but does go back in. It could be that daft plastic gpu filler block gets in the way due to a different card. Be sure to set SECUREBOOT=OFF whilst old card is still in but don't boot into Windows, shut down then replace card. I had already Uninstalled Drivers (not DDU as that is not needed unless there are issues later as it can make other problems).

Asus blower RTX 2060 stuck in my XPS (2018) 8930 today, no issues what so every.  Reason for upgrade was to use dell gsync 1440p monitor as GTX 1060 could not handle AAA games on it.  Once booted off cards swapped out, drivers updated, perfect for what I needed.  Games running at over 100 fps with gsync on, just the job. 1080 (ti) or RTX 20 series 70/80 are gonna need new PSU so dependant on what your after would high recommend a RTX 2060 for casual gaming at 1080p or 1440p.  Best was to keep the xps on the road and upgrade safely if just change the case to make like easy.

Can you link what card you got? I’m looking to get one aswell.

Did it require any cables for the card? I know this might be a dumb question but I looked at my card and it had no cables.
