Dell OS Recovery Image creation failed - usbkey.zip

I have tried to create a USB OS recovery image for my new Dell XPS 9500, using the instructions given at https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/OSISO/recoverytool , but it fails towards the end, with the error message:

 

An error occurred while extracting image file usbkey.zip. Please check the file and try again

 

This is clearly the same error as reported in https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/OS-Recovery-tool-error-extracting-image-file-usbkey-zip/m-p/7412537#M37050

However, there is no actual SOLUTION to the problem given in the board where this was reported.

 

Does anyone have a solution, as to what I need to do differently in order to successfully create a USB recovery image?

Is the USBKey.zip one of those password recovery type situations?

If you are running Win 10 and your system came with Win 10 installed, have you tried creating a Win 10 Recovery Drive?

The solution to this is as follows:

The Dell OS Recovery Tool ( "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\OS Recovery Tool\DellOSRecoveryTool.exe" ) is created with a strict codepage requirement, which is kind of sloppy by Dell, but hey.

Here's how to have it run without failing:

On the Windows 10 system you've installed the Dell app on, go to Settings > Time & Language, then click on Language in the left bar, and under the "Preferred Languages" just make sure English (United States) is the top and Default App language. You can set it to be the top one by clicking on it, and then use the arrows to move it to the top. No need to restart Windows, just close the Dell tool and start from scratch with the Service tag etc.

That helped to finally create a boot stick. I hope DELL manages to include some workaround in future versions.

 

I am wondering if there is any way of letting them know that this major flaw exists?

At least embedding a simple hint "change language to English" should be easy to implement.

Besides running the recovery tool as administrator, you'll need to set the read write attributes for the writing  app as well , found in the folder called external: Rawrite32.exe

You will need to add writing permission to you as user.
