XPS 13 9310 WiFi randomly shuts down (AX500-DBS)

Hello everyone,

I've had my XPS 13 9310 for a month now and since about two weeks my WiFi stops working in random moments. Sometimes it's after waking up from sleep, sometimes it's just randomly during use. The laptop has a Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX500-DBS card and it looks like the driver just stops working. The card starts working again when I shut down the system completely and turn it on again.

When the WiFi card is down, the Windows Device Manager shows "This device cannot start. (Code 10) (Operation Failed) The requested operation was unsuccessful.". The Event Viewer shows multiple errors around the time the WiFi goes down, e.g.

  • The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table.
  • The version number is incorrect for this driver.
  • Miniport Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX500-DBS Wireless Network Adapter, {86c1bbda-57fc-4364-ad13-5fc9493cc130}, had event Fatal error: The miniport has detected an internal error

This issue occurred for me on:

  • Windows 10 Pro builds 2004 and 20H2
  • Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX500-DBS driver version 1.0.0.1428 (from 2020-09-03, latest as of 2021-01-04)
  • BIOS version 1.1.4
  • All other drivers on latest versions.

I've been in contact with Dell support about this particular issue for 2 weeks now, but they haven't found a fix yet. What has been done so far:

Does anyone else have the problem (and hopefully a solution)?

If Dell were to offer a replacement with the AX201 Intel chip, would you guys take it?

We are getting Win 10 updates right now, make sure and verify the Wi-Fi operation to see if anything helps..

@andybones The AX201 is not what you seem to think it is.. you probably meant the AX210, which is the same as the Intel Killer 1675.. or the AX200 which is the same as the Intel Killer 1650..

I have just been reading and came across this:

Dell offers two wireless radio options for the XPS 13, and both are Killer-branded. The default wireless card is the Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650, which is a 2x2:2 wireless solution based on the excellent Intel AX200. If somehow you missed it, Intel recently acquired Rivet Networks, so the Killer brand should continue to provide the performance and stability of the Intel adapters for the foreseeable future. Dell also lists a second Killer AX500 Wi-Fi 6 option, but this Killer product is based on the Qualcomm 6390 Wi-Fi 6 chipset. Since Killer has been acquired, that part may not be around for much longer.

Perhaps as I have deleted everything killer and am using Qualcomm drivers my wi-fi is working perfectly ( 8 days up to now on this latest test)

Wi-Fi cards have one of two possible interfaces.  The most common is the PCIe version.  The less common is the CNVio interface, ie AX201.  You can tell the difference by the number of Keyways.

The Intel AX210 card is a Wi-Fi 6e configuration.. and would be an upgrade from the Killer AX500.

Company affiliations and property/patent rights negotiations during companies changing hands, can be very confusing.

@Saltgrass

I was offered the AX201, is this not a good chip, or a possible mistake on Dell's part? I re-checked e-mail and it is saying "Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX201 2x2 802.11ax 160MHz + Bluetooth 5.1 Wireless Card". Thank you for your time and information.

When they informed you of the option, did you not reject the entire process?  I mentioned it when I saw that earlier so the offer was bogus to start with.

The AX201 is more than likely not compatible with your system.  It is the equivalent to the AX200 so is not an upgrade..  The Killer AX500 is a Qualcomm card made in Thailand..  I have no idea why the engineers at Dell decided to use it..

@Saltgrass I was offered the AX201 or a 2-in-1 with the AX1650.

I prefer the clamshell.

If the AX201 isn't compatible I wonder what it would be?

If it comes with another ax500 I'll just send it back.

I guess I'm not understanding why the ax201 was offered if as you say it won't be compatible. ?

Is there something wrong with the ax201 I'm misunderstanding?

I said it probably wasn't compatible.  But you never know until you see some specs which indicate it is.  Of course, we were not talking about the 2-in-1.  I would have chosen the 2-in-1 also but the other system does not seem to show the AX201 option..

If it will take the 1650, then it will take the 200..but whatever, if you think the actual Intel is better and they will send you one with that, fine.  If you continue to have problems, I would look at other equipment to see if a router change might be in order.

@Saltgrass Hey man as I mentioned earlier, I really do appreciate the information. So I'm just trying to understand why you wouldn't take the AX201 but you say you would take the AX200 which from my understand is funereally the same chip? Can you shed anymore info on why the AX201 doesn't suffice for you. Again, I really appreciate your time and information.

Also I realize this isn't from Dell, but it's was for now all I can find that lists the AX201 and the Dell XPS 13 9310.

Thank you for your response.

Well I agree, the AX500 is having issues for me across multiple routers. Which is why I opted for the AX201. Are you saying the AX500 will still be in the XPS even with the AX201?? I'm sorry, i'm just trying to learn and understand. Thank you kindly.

The Wi-Fi card is soldered in place.  They will replace your motherboard to replace the card.

Has Dell offered to do that type of replacement?

My only problem with the AX201 was I wasn't sure it would be compatible with that system.

All you need to do is what makes sense to you.  If the AX201 works in your system, fine.  I have one on my ASUS Z490 motherboard and it works fine..

Since no one seems to know what is causing the problem, you only have certain options.  I think I would try to get away from the AX500 with anything I could, but that's just me..

@Saltgrass Hey thank you so much for your fast and kind responses, I know this is your free time.

I apologize, I realize I never pointed this out. So this will be a brand new laptop that is currently in production and esp. to arrive End of June.
