XPS 15 9560 - nvidia GTX 1050 Error 43

About a month ago, a problem with the graphics card in my laptop suddenly stopped working with 'error 43' popping up in windows device manager. Since then, I have tried several different methods to get it to work again without avail, and I am worried that I will have to replace the motherboard to fix this issue. I have reinstalled the nvidia drivers, performing a clean install as well as getting earlier versions. I have even performed a clean installation of windows and the problem still persists. The strangest thing is that sometimes - on the very rare occasion - the card will appear to be working in device manager. Each time, I have tried to open a game or something that uses the gpu and it runs incredibly choppy (most of the time the application is frozen). Is my gpu dead? or is there some way of fixing this I have not yet thought of?
