XPS 15-9570, 3rd party 32GB RAM issue booting

I bought some Micron Ballistix 32GB RAM (SODIMM 2x16GB DDR4-2666 1.2V) and my XPS 9570 doesn't boot using this RAM. It blink 2x amber followed by 3x white lights on boot, with no other activity. I cannot even get to BIOS/UEFI. This light signal corresponds to no RAM, but clearly there's RAM in there. The sticks were tested on another laptop and they work fine (and they also work fine, interestingly, in certain configurations in the 9570 - see below).

I have figured out certain configurations in which the system boots up. For example, if I insert either of the new sticks in SODIMM slot 1, as long as SODIMM slot 2 has one of the old sticks of RAM in it, it boots fine. If the slots are both the new RAM, or if I just use one slot (with the other being empty) with the new RAM - it doesn't work.

Also slot 1 having the original RAM and slot 2 having the new RAM doesn't work either. The only configuration that works is slot 1 having the new 16GB RAM and slot 2 having the original 8GB RAM.

Perhaps this is a BIOS issue? Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I’m having the same problem. With Both new DIMMs it shows no Memory, with the configuration as you described above I show 20Gb of installed RAM

I also noticed that both DIMMs are registering at 2400 MHz I figured since 2666 MHz RAM was shipped with it, it would support 2666 MHz speeds.

In principle, 2666 RAM should work, but there is a set of other important parameters. Once the latencies could be set and tested manually, nowadays this is negotiated automatically between the stick and the motherboard, I'm afraid not much you can do if it fails.

You can check Userbenchmark results for the 9570, 9560, 9550 which RAM worked to other folks, at what clock and what was the benchmark result. "Performance" RAM tends to perform notably better in specific benchmark and at some very specific tasks, but mostly less than a percent of improvement in general benchmarks, hence it is mostly better throwing the price premium money somewhere else.

The RAM in question works for XPS 15 9560 and 9550 just fine. Search for the term "XPS" in the reviews/questions section.

Bump.

Any thoughts/input?

Hi @strawberrybush, according to the Crucial USA website, there are plenty of Ballistix Sport memory modules compatible with the XPS 9570 - http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-15-%289570%29

Looking at the Amazon link you provided, the modules you have are DDR4 2400MHz. When comparing this to the Crucial list, all of the compatible Ballistix Sport LT modules are 2666 MHz. I suspect this is where the incompatibility comes from.

@Parman05 - can you confirm the exact model of memory modules that you are experiencing the same issue with please.

Thanks,

Alan

Hi @Dell-Alan D. Your link on Crucial's website is giving me a 404 (Page Not Found) error.

Additionally, this is the memory that I have:

Ballistix Sport LT 32GB (2 x 16G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2666 (PC4 21300) Memory (Notebook Memory) Model BLS2K16G4S26BFSD

This is definitely 2666 MHz memory, and it should work. In fact, here is the link to it on Crucial's website, and when I plug in the laptop make/model Dell XPS 9570 it comes up as compatible. But it doesn't work in my laptop.

Additionally, this is a problem that a majority of 9570 owners are having. Please see this thread (and there are countless other examples on the Dell subreddit): https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/8ktbx6/xps_9570_issues_with_after_market_ram_upgrade/

Alan,

Mine are 2666 MHz Version. Here is the information for my memory module. I have verified that each one works with the original memory also installed.

This is the Memory device that is currently installed. if you check that Part Number on Crucial website it takes you to http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/bls2k16g4s26bfsd which indicates its compatible

@strawberrybush @Parman05 thanks for the info and the reddit links. I'm going to pass this to engineering to see if they can provide more info. I'll let you know what I hear back from them, it could be a few days before I can provide an update.

@Dell-Alan D Thanks for the information.  let me know if you'd like me to get the information for the other module.

Have a good day.

Hi guys,

@Parman05 @strawberrybush a new BIOS has been released to address a few issues encountered so far. There is a mention of addressing Hynix memory compatibility in the release notes. I can't guarantee it will resolve the issue with Crucial/Ballistix modules. Can you try the update and let me know how you get on please.

Here's the link to the BIOS - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=TTY8P

@Dell-Alan D  Just tried to add the second module and i got the same issue as before after reboot BIOS reports no RAM was installed on last boot.

I have also verified that I'm running BIOS version 1.1.4

Thanks

@Parman05 @strawberrybush apologies for the confusion around the BIOS update, it looks like 1.1.4 has been pulled from our drivers site after I posted the message. This can occur if we find additional issues after rolling it out. Prior to that there have been 2 BIOS releases, 1.0.0 and 1.0.5

Hopefully the BIOS will be revised and the released pretty soon. If you could wait until then and carry out the BIOS update and then feedback it would be greatly appreciated.

Could you also private message me your service tags please so I can pass the info on to my engineering team.

Thanks

Alan

Just want to +1 this and confirm I'm having exactly the same issue with the 8gb modules of Micron Ballistix Sport

The exact model of ram I'm using is: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/bls8g4s26bfsdk

Installing 1 or 2 sticks fails with 2x amber 3x white status lights

Installing 1 stick paired with 1 stick of factory ram seems to work as described above...
