I have the exact same issue. It's utterly insane to me that I paid $3000 for this laptop and I can't use my touchpad reliably.
Dell, this laptop has been out for almost a year now, why is this still an issue? Is it faulty hardware?
This has been posted about on these forums for months now, the exact same touchpad issue where you simply can't input anything intermittently, so it leads me to believe this is a KNOWN hardware issue for which there is no solution.
According to what I have found, the problem with the xps 9510 touchpad is probably caused by hardware. I have the following 2 new findings: 1. The touchpad of the Inspiron 7610 was found to be a grounding problem. There are already posts with solutions. 2. The xps9520 trackpad provider has been changed from elan to synaptics
This touchpad issue seems to be pretty major, I am not sure why Dell isn't addressing it. I was hoping the latest Elan driver would resolve the problem since it's been getting more attention but I was disappointed yet again. Since it hasn't been fixed in any of the bios updates or touchpad driver updates and is an issue on Windows and Linux, maybe we are dealing with a hardware problem. Now we will see if Dell actually steps up and fixes it.
Exact same issue that XPS 15 7590, fixed the issue by disabling the IO controller with a PowerShell script, got a XPS 9730 and same issue again. I remember long time ago touchpads were so nice, they had 2 buttons and worked flawlessly. The one butting thing is the most annoying thing plus the unresponsiveness is the worse! The touchpad issue is not a hardware issue, is a software issue, I had the problem with the XPS 15 and now the 17, same problem, have had replacements of motherboard, touchpad, even a new laptop, issue is simply solved at least on the XPS15 by diabling the power management of the IO A369 controller, needs to be done with powershell. The XPS 17 I have not had a chance to test it, but the touchpad skips the same way so I am thinking the IO controller will be the same solution, is unbelievable how they have not fixed this problem and keep trying to fix it by wasting on replacement parts that have nothing to do with the problem.
I have a 9710 on which warranty ran out June 2022. Touchpad has been fine until about a month ago. Now unusable. Three questions: (1) Is there anything definitive on whether this is hardware vs. software? (2) What does it cost to have Dell replace the touchpad? (3) Has anyone ordered the touchpad part and attempted to replace it themselves?

Update = Resolved After completing troubleshooting, a DELL-Cares agent setup a part replacement.

Completely unacceptable for this price range

nthoney17,
Following up to see if you tested the touchpad in the diagnostics and if so what was the outcome. Let us know.
