XPS 17 no sound output over HDMI for active games on Steam only

I got a Sony A90J TV connected to my XPS 17 9700 and got the problem that the sound of an active game on Steam is not feed to the TV but always comes out of the Laptop speakers.

The weird thing is that in every other app the sound correctly plays from the TV.

Tried all versions of audio settings but they are ignored for Steam Games.

I suspect it has to do with the NVIDIA part of the system.

Since Games use the NVIDIA GPU, the sound path may still be routed differnetly?

Your issue sounds somewhat familiar to mine.

Nvidia appears to be causing either lagging sound or no sound with the XPS 17 9710

Today I worked with a brand new XPS 13 today. No sound issues when using an external monitor with speakers. The only significant difference? No nvidia drivers!

When I connect my Dell S3221qs monitor to my XPS 17 9710 I start having sound issues. The computer will claim to be playing sound but it is not. Occasionally, a small portion of the selected sound will play. Most of the time the only sound is silence.

You can see this issue in the video.

I have tried two 8k 60 hertz hdmi cables, two displayport 4k 60 hertz hdmi cables.

I have tried to the Dell Nvidia drivers, the Microsoft update Nvidia drivers and the latest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website.

The results are always the same.  Either no sound or lagging sound.
