Gentoo Linux on Dell Dimension 4700

I'm trying to install Gentoo Linux on my brand new Dell Dimension 4700, and I'm running into some severe problems.

In particular, during a normal boot on the 2004.3 minimal LiveCD, although linux detects the NIC, and I configure it correctly, it can make no connection anywhere. I saw someone else who said that passing "acpi=on" as a boot parameter worked for him, but this does nothing for me (as "acpi=ht" is passed as a boot parameter from grub). Passing "noapic" resolves the problem with the NIC but then makes the SATA drive disappear (i.e., not be detected).

Anyone have any thoughts?
