Dell 4600 has a DVD Rom drive that is causing some problems when installing software ffrom a Cd in the drive.  Drive is HL-DT-ST GDR8162B

 I installed Quicken 2004 and there was no sound.  I uninstalled and reinstalled and it was Ok.  Uninstalled and reinstalled again and again no sound.

 

I Installed Ulead PictureShow 2 and then tried to install updates.  Update said DVD PictureShow was not installed.  Checked hard drive and it was there.  Uninstalled and reinstalled from DVD  RW drive and was able to update.

   This has happened a few other times.  Any way to check out the drive before calling Dell?  Thanks.
