I'm running win xp pro, sp1a on a dimension 4600. I cannot get ANY new software to install (including sp2). Usually, these just hang with a message of "setup is performing the requested operations" or "generating setup script"... hang for hours and have to be terminated abnormally (through task manager).

 

I've tried and gotten similar results (hanging or completely failed installs) with a wide range of software including: SP2, individual windows security updates, itunes, quicken, turbotax. i get the same problem when trying to UNinstanll visual studio.net.

 

I've scanned for malware and run norton personal firewall and antivirus. I'm trying all this as admin.

 

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Suggest reinstalling xp?
