Area-51 R7, motherboard no POST

Hello

I have the R7 motherboard out of the case on a bench.

Original Power supply. Setup:

  • Threadripper2950x with original AIO cooler
  • one stick of RAM (DDR4 2666 - multiple different branded sticks, one at a time in different slots)
  • AMD HD 8570 GPU (standard PCI power, no additional power required) connected to generic monitor
  • MB to IO board: Panel1, USB1, Audio, the 2 USB3 connectors
  • Also to/from IO board: Power connector, 2 POGO connections, Logo board connector, battery pack connection
  • Logo Board: just the one connector from IO board. RGB connectors left open
  • PS to main board: the 24 pin ATX connector + the 2 8-pin connectors at opposite corners of the board (IO board power also connected as mentioned)

The issue is that the board does not POST. No video out. To my mind it is in some type of loop (keyboard when connected, the num lock repeatedly  goes on and off for about 5 seconds in time with the GPU fan coming on and off (video link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhgLxvTNzKY&authuser=0)

The logo board LEDs are a cyan color if that is any indication. There are no beeps, so no indication there either

I have tried with multiple GPUs (the 8570 is known good), multiple sticks of ram in all of the slots by itself, and everything I can think of. I have also cleared the CMOS, and bled power in case that was the issue, but no beans. I have had the GPU in different PCIE slots. I removed and reseated the CPU. I double and triple checked each connector/connection. The behavior is unaffected by any of these things. No matter what I do, it does that 5 second loop.

Any guidance on what I might be missing or what else I can try?

Thanks

All of this is speculation from my experience modding my Area 51 R5;

I don't think the missing temp sensor will prevent a successful POST. It did however cause my case fans to run 'full tilt'.

If the 2 fans you are referencing on the IO board are the U2/SSD cooling fans inside the mounting bracket . . . I don't think those missing would prevent a successful POST.

When I did not have a full complement of OEM case fans, I got no response from the monitor (black screen); periodic beeps (maybe 2 min apart), and it seemed like it was cycling through diagnostic testing for OEM case fans. This is complete speculation because I have no monitor video.

If you think the OEM case fans will help . . . PM me how many you need, and a good shipping address.

Specifications
Aurora R7 is Intel NOT AMD based.

Processor • 8th Generation Intel Core i5/i7

No Idea why your title says R7

or Aurora because Neither Applies.

You wont be able to use a legacy card Radeon HD series . Must use OEM Card.  It won't post with Non OEM ancient card.

 Video is High end

Dual/Triple AMD (CrossFire)

Power Supply MUST BE very specific Dell OEM 850W/1500W or high end like corsair 1600I with 150 to 225W combined power for the 3.3v/5v rails.

The I/O board is NOT optional so using bare board on the bench is also not supported.

Nobody is supporting Legacy cards and Joe's crab shack power supplies for this model. Video cards go in VERY specific Slots.

Do you have an OEM TOP_FAN and PCI_FAN connected to the mobo headers, in addition to the 2 temp sensors?

@ProfessorW00d

Not supported doesn't mean not working.

The other parameters as far as power supply and video card still apply. There is no such thing as an R7 thread-ripper Dell. No Aurora has STR4 cpu etc X399 chipset. So you do not have an R7 thread-ripper dell.

Area51 R3 service-manual

There is an R3 and R6

Area51 R3/R6 docs

The Reboot looping/flashing seems like insufficient power and or cooling.

NON POST is the not supported legacy video card.

Dell doesn't support new case or other parts but you can do it.  Its not supported however and not documented by dell. @Cass-Ole  would be the subject matter expert on these kinds of things having done a lot of the legwork as far as cables and IO and power supplies etc.

AURORA is not thread ripper. But I have no info on R7 AREA 51. I didn't have time to correct that. The original objection about AURORA in the OP title remains. Clipping out of context is not disproving there are no Aurora R7 thread-rippers. No Aurora has STR4 CPU and X399 chipset.

@ProfessorW00d , the answer is  no on both counts.

1. is this behavior consistent with those missing fans?

2. Since I don't have those two original fans, are those standard 3 or 4-pin fans I can replace with others?

Thanks

I suppose it is an R6 then. I recall seeing R7, on one of the boards, but I might have been mistaken.

I am unable to edit the original post to change it it R6.

Either case the rest of the info (including TR-2950x) stands.

Thanks

I will give a few AMD workstation cards I have on hand a try then, and update status. I'd originally figured I'd go as simple as possible, but evidently not a good idea

@pvravi1

Didn't show cooler the power cycling  every 5 seconds may be overheating of cpu.  It should not go off by itself unless there is a physical problem with PSU or with cooling etc.

HOWEVER  only OEM video card is likely to work.

I have however found that the new SWFT 105 RX6400 cards work in My Unit even with secure boot ON.

No Idea why but they do work.

RX-64XL4SFG2 B09Y7358KJ

This OEM RX460 is also working

Radeon-RX460 CN-0FJC5Y B09RRKC8HZ

Cheapest card in my toolkit that works is

@pvravi1

You need to resolve it shutting off after 5 seconds.

With NO GPU it should turn on and beep.

The systems tend to also require a keyboard and mouse Wired.

Although the Unified Logitech Units like the K800 solve that.

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/keyboards/wireless-illuminated-keyboard-k800.920-002359.html

You can pair a unifying mouse to the same reciever with the software on a working pc.

I use an M525 mouse.

Logitech-M525-Wireless-Mouse  B005KSAHZU

https://support.logi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025297913-Unifying-Software

These units work because there is no pairing or driver needed.  They are NOT Bluetooth.

LOW and SLow constant beep is bad ram.

if you remove all ram and video and turn on it should BEEP but it should NOT Turn itself off unless there is a physical problem like bad PSU or CPU overheating.

Just to be clear, there's no shut off per se. It just keeps cycling, and I can't even say if that's power-cycling. Keyboard when connected has the num-lock going on/off every 5 seconds or so, so also the (legacy)GPU fan.

I did try no GPU, but may not have had a KB and mouse connected then. Will try again, but my previous trial w/o GPU had no beeps for certain.

Thats 3 items or check: the 2 fans, modern GPU, and no GPU w/ wired KB/Mouse

I don't have the original fans, and they seem to be custom connectors, not standard, so not sure how that'll go
