Aurora R13, auto restart when playing WOW

Hi all,

Can somebody there help me to identify what the issue is here? It's very disappointing that whenever I play World of Warcraft (WOW) with this brand new Alienware PC, Windows 11 get auto restarted sometimes after a few minutes and sometimes after 1 hour or less.

I have tried everything without touching the hardware, including the following:

1. Run the post-boot diagnosis (F12 -> Diagnosis). It shows no error with any of the hardware.

2. Run the online System Diagnosis on Dell website. It shows no error with the hardware.

3. I used to apply "High Performance" Power option plan in Windows 11. Windows restarted in a few minutes after running WOW. I changed the "Minimum Processor State" to 5% in the power plan. Windows restarted after 1 hour of gameplay. But when I continue to run WOW, Windows will restart by itself after a few minutes.

4. Disable the "Automatically Restart" feature in Advanced System Properties -> Startup Recovery settings. After playing WOW for a few minutes, it goes to a blank screen but the system does not restart.

5. In Windows Event viewer under System log, Event 41 was generated every time it restarted unexpectedly. The event does not tell any specific reason that causes the restart. But the source of the event indicates it's from "Kernel-Power", which means it might be caused by power issue. The issue might be related to any components such as  PSU, CPU, display card, motherboard, etc.

6. Updated BIOS to the latest version 1.0.2. Still the same issue.

7. Install the latest display driver from Nvidia official website. My display card is GeForce 3080. Apply all Windows Update. Same issue occurred.

8. Reset Windows back to the factory default state, by running Support OS Recovery tool. I have tried this several times already, and only install WOW after Windows has been setup. Update the latest display driver and Windows Update.

What should I do next? Contact Dell Technical Support and they will replace the hardware one by one to isolate the issue? This is very time consuming. Any clue?

Best Regards,

Henry Chang

@WJTech

The other thing I would try BEFORE doing that is to do Fresh Start.

That removes all the Non windows software including Killer Smartnet which is not so smart.

Open Admin Command prompt and run

c:\windows\system32\systemreset.exe  -cleanpc

Click next and say keep my files.

It will leave an HTML file on the desktop telling you what it removed.

Once thats done set Power profile to HIGH Performance and run admin command prompt again disable hibernation via

c:\windows\system32\powercfg -h off

Also works in win11 with right click start

windows terminal (Admin)

I use a Dell Precision T1700 with optional 365W power supply and a Quadro RTX 4000.

The $1000 cost of the GPU can easily be justified to management because the quadro is designed to run Autocad, Maya, Adobe premier, and other real workloads.  It also happens to do ray tracing and run games.  Its fully directx 12 compatable and works fine with windows 8, 10, 11 using the Mosetup Method.

Will be interesting to see if it is software, or hardware.

I’ve had crashing on warzone the last two nights, error was with direct X. Never been a problem yet and I’ve been using the R13 for a while. Only change to my system was installing Pubg before the crashing

Just to add Cinebench and Timespy tests are running fine.

Tech came today and replaced the motherboard. Had the same rebooting issue. After about 20 minutes of trying to convince dell tech support not to send another on site tech here to replace the replaced motherboard, I had them send me a prepaid box so I can send it to them so it either come back fixed or back to dell for a return. I’m hoping I get a working computer sent back to me and not another potato.

Good luck with the replacement, I’ve looked into my crashing on Warzone and it’s fairly common, 6068 direct x fault. I have a duel screen setup and out of curiosity I ran Cinebench and Timespy at the same time just now and zero problems. My R13 has been rock solid, 2068 points in R23 in single core Multi core was over 26000, this without running Alien Command Center for performance mode in cooling etc

Add me to the list of new R13's with this problem. I get the black screen, 15-20s hang, and then the system reboots at random. I can be browsing the web, playing youtube video, or gaming and the system just does it at random.

As others have mentioned, all the Dell hardware tests pass, updated drivers do not matter.

12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700KF
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

512GB SSD PM9A1 (Default with system purchase)

Current SITREP,

I am cautiously optimistic that I'm stable and have new info on the problem. After initiating a "c:\windows\system32\systemreset.exe  -cleanpc" as advised by @speedstep I started digging around and found several dump files that referenced AWCC. So far I am about 18 hours in with no crashes. This includes:

3-4 hours of typical work (web browser, office, etc)

A few hours of League of Legends

9 hours of ETH hashing

Note, I did NOT reload any of the Alienware tools or Control Panel. This means I have no control over lights, fans, etc.

My working theory is that something in Alienware Control Center is trying to handle power management that is the root of the crash. I will report back if I crash again, or in a few days if I'm still stable.

Update1: My system has been stable for the last 24 hours under different workloads i.e. gaming and productivity. This is what I am currently testing if anyone else wants to try.

  1. Fresh system boot/startup, not from sleep/hibernation
  2. Changed Refresh from 120Hz to 100Hz in the Nvidia Control Panel (if applicable).
  3. Switched the power profile in Alienware Control Center (ACC) from balanced to High Performance. The goal here is to keep the system from going to sleep.

I am convinced this is software and not hardware, GPU, Power Supply related which is why I recommend installing directx June 2010, Visual C++ X86 2010, Dotnet 2.0 3.5 SP1 full install, Systemreset.exe -cleanpc,  Powercfg -h off, and then make sure all windows updates are done and reboot at least 3 times in a row from cold.  Clear Event log,  and test again.

I use my PC that I do work on to test as well as play games.  Its my personal machine and I use it as a lab test configuration to advise clients when they have issues.   WOW is free up to level 20 so its a good "Test" to see if it stresses out your PC during normal operation. Pretty sure CSS is also free to play on steam, so thats another one to try.  The Tropics benchmark will not run if you are missing the directx elements and have not re enabled legacy direct play in windows add remove features.  There are other things depricated in newer versions of 10 and 11 so if you are having those issues note them and do a new thread.   I also disable C states in bios, Disable S3 S5 power saving.  Set the power profile to High performance,  Set PCI-E sleep to Never, Set PC low power mode from 20 min to 999 min,  Disable Hibernate  ( Powercfg -h off )  and set turn off display to at least 5 hours.

I received my RMA box from dell today. The plastic bag is too small to put it in, the fittings don’t match and even the box isn’t long enough to put the PC in. I’m hoping I can just throw some tape on the box it came in and ship it out. I guess they never thought they’d have a r13 RMA so fast.

Hi speedstep, many thanks for your troubleshooting tips. I used your suggested steps today. So far, I did not encounter the black screen l, stutter and reboot - today. I will keep testing for the following few days. Btw, I'm testing with starwars Jedi fallen and also YouTube video playing.

I am now stable for 36 hours. I have been stress testing it for this whole time. What appears to have worked for me is the "cleanpc". I believe it is Alienware Control Center that is causing the problem. I have not installed it back to the system, but if I'm still stable in a few days, I am going to install it and set it as @Arexadus mentions above.

Hey everyone,

same issue - had 2 crashes so far...

The support restored the defaults of my bios and advised me to install the newest graphics card drivers which didn't help.

I now switched from balanced to High Performance, let's see if that helps.

Funny story: Had a different PC before the R13 (also with RTX3080) which I sent back after 2 weeks because of exactly the same issue - sudden crashes with a Kernel Power 41 Event.

According to their forum, they fixed the issue with a BIOS update which is interesting.

Let's see how Dell deals with this.

It was a bit disapointing that the service guy wasn't even aware of this issue even though a lot - if not all - R13 Users are suffering from it.
