Aurora R7, largest M.2 NVMe?
What is the largest M.2 NVMe drive for the Aurora R7. I currently have the PC400 SK hynix 512gb dirve in it plus a 2tb hd. when purchased it said that the boot drive would be the ssd but when i got the system it wasn't. I want to put the os and programs on a ssd and just use the others as storage. Any suggestions as to what's the max the system will handle.

As per Crucial at this site, the largest compatible NVMe/PCIe SSD they sell that they guarantee as compatible is 1 TB.
EDIT: Thanks for the additional info Tesla. I had not seen any additional information on the size. Always good to know. And you type faster than this old guy.

NVMe-SSD size-limit is 2tb or your wallet.
That 512gb Hynix 512gb is fine for a boot drive. It will hold all Windows, Apps, and programs with ease. Even a few of your favorite large-game installs.
Yes, a clean-install is one sure way to get C: as bootable NVMe. You might even be able to Clone it .

I also see that the bios is set to raid and Intel RST is installed and running. Can I just set to ahci and get rid of IRST? Do I have to reinstall everything if I just leave drives the way they are? Currently booting from a 2tb hd.

1. I would:

2. Not sure what you are saying.

3. Yeah, that's lame. Disconnect for now, as it is your "temporary backup".
So, your bootable C: will eventually be a NVMe-SSD.
Later you can use that slow-mechanical spinning-HDD as a data-drive or whatever. But you know, 2.5-inch SATA-3/600 SSD's are ridiculously cheap right now. While they are 5-times slower than a NVMe-SSD, they are however 5-times FASTER than any spinning-drive.
Not sure why people put spinning-drives inside desktops these days.It should be all-SSD (NVMe-boot and then SATA-SSD for the rest). Large spinners can go outside ... in USB-3/C enclosures or inside your small NAS.

If you switch from RAID to AHCI, you don't have to reinstall everything but you will need to boot into recovery and install AHCI drivers to replace IRST. If you don't, Windows won't boot.
Personally, I'd just wipe everything out and start over. At least you'll have a clean install. But, whatever floats your boat.
