Alienware Area 51 R2 and GTX Titan X Sli

I went for it and bought two titan x's for sli....but had problems and got 6 beeps.

However - on further examination - It seems one of them is defective (tried in the top slot on its own and got 6 beeps).  The other is fine in single use.

BUT. I'm reading reports of Titan X sli not working with a dell  motherboard (not sure if its an r2) - from the EVGA forum:

"If you're not even getting the MB BIOS screen then this is definitely a hardware compatibility issue, likely between MB system BIOS and the Titan BIOS. I discussed this with our development team and we're actually investigating a similar issue reported on a Dell MB. The Dell MB would beep 6 times repeatedly when two Titan X cards are installed, no video at all. Works fine with single Titan X or with GTX780 SLI. This could be the MB not capable of supporting GPU with such large memory size, but we won't know until we can hook up a debugger to verify."

Anyone else tried? comment?  ive got the i7 5820.

So my problem was solved, wasn't either of the cards, it was the motherboard bios.

That’s great man! I’m glad that worked out for you. I wish it was that simple for me but this motherboard only has one bios version available and I have it. I did try clearing the cmos and reinstalling the bios but that didn’t help at all. One thing that I find strange is that the motherboard shows up as unknown when running programs that are supposed to tell you the manufacture. I can only hope that a replacement card will fix my issues or that dell is on the case and are working on a bios fix. I know that they are aware of the issues and can only hope they are working on it. Anyway man, glad you are up and running.

I have 3 Titan X cards, and I am getting the 6 beeps.

Anybody have any updates.

Where is Dell on this issue?

My Titan x  SLI set up didn't work sure to defective cards -evga replaced and still one was faulty - I'm hoping to get my new cards this week.

Alienware have confirmed to me that SLI works with the Area 51 r2  and - lbowiejr now has a working SLI set up - like me he also had a defective card first time around.

Tri SLI is of course different -I would check your cards individually to make sure it's not the cards, whilst PM'ing Dell on the compatability.  I'm also thinking you have a 1500w psu.  Do you have the Intel 5960 or 5820 - that may have a bearing due to rail support.

Thanks for the response.

I do have a 1500w psu, I have an Intel 5960 processor.

I have tried each video individually and the system boots as expected, I have also tried all possible combinations using two video cards I get 6 beeps and three gives 6 beeps also.

I have spend some time on the phone with Dell, suggestions range from bring the system to local computer shop to not connecting the SLI bridge.

Upgrading video cards should not be this difficult.

That's not good at all.

I'll let you know how I go when I get my replacement cards.

You should be able to run three cards easy with that set up. It looks like people are getting different feed back from dell regarding this issue. I started a thread a while back on alienware arena about this all. Most recently someone made a post about what dell has been telling him. I also just put up a screen shot from my computer showing that it will work with two titans. Somewhere between dell and nvidia there is a disconnect, one just blames the other when I think they should be working together to get it fixed and be 100% sure that this set up will work. Neither one of these products are cheap and it would be nice to get some real customer service instead of the run around.

Here's the link to that thread on alienwarearena.

the good info is close to the bottom of the second page.

Horrible, Horrible.

Safe to say this is last time I buy a Dell gaming machine, good for 6 months. New gaming hardware available system and the machine is at it's end of life.

I after 2 defective cards and returns I finally have 2 working Titan x cards from EVGA.

But they will not work in SLI in my Area 51 R2 - all I get is 6 beeps.

I am using the EVGA 60mm spaced solid bridge.  On another post  someone said that you have to use the Alienware supplied Nvidia solid bridge.

Mileena previously confirmed that the Titan x SLI is compatible, but on Alienware arena someone is quoting that Carlos (in Dell) reports there is a problem which dell is working on.

Chris, Mileena could you let me know if there is a problem, or perhaps at least eliminate my EVGA SLI bridge from being the problem.

Many thanks.

No still no solution, Dell has not been very helpful at all.

Good luck.

yea we are still on the launch day bios and there are a myriad of issues with this bios, and are in desperate need of a update or we are stuck with a severely gimped motherboard compared to what other x99 machines offer even on the lower end...

This is now my edited post addressed to LBOWIEJR, a lucky fellow grey who has a working TitanX pair. On Arena, Bowie was heard to say: 'I honestly can't think of anything that I've done differently than anyone else', to get his twins to work in Triad. Having seen photos of the R2 alienboard, it occurred to me Bowie might have gotten his hands on a special version or revision. I posted photos of different boards, noting three versions & a revision; I asked Bowie to post the actual version / revision board he owns, in the event those people who can't SLI might be using a 'different' board from his.

Virtua4, another member here who can not SLI has confirmed today he's running an identical version & revision board to Bowie - therefore - Board Revision Theory was qwickly proven to be a moot point, a dead end. You're encouraged to look at the photos & take note of the different versions / revisions floating around out there in space; to spare unnecessary reading time I've edited out old commentary.

there was no legible photo of this board's labels which might say REV X00, for instance, but note it is VER: 0B. Note 3203413 CE0523. (I begin to wonder if there's an MS-7862 Ver 0A / 0C also)

Version / revision may not be applicable here, now, with TX-SLI, but be mindful in the future that boards do undergo revisions, the type of which the aliens will not tell you exactly what the revision is or does, if it was a material change or simply 'cosmetic'.

It might help to know which brand of card & which SLI bridge lbowiejr's using, unless that was already posted. And I apologize ahead of time if this overall post turns out to be a dead-end in your pursuit for SLI answers.

... @ Virtua: that's a bummer you two have the same board. the mystery seems to deepen ...
