17 R4, black screen once windows load

i bought a Alienware 17 R4 not long ago knowing that the machine was defective,

i was able to "somewhat bring it back to life after a full rebuild.

did a lot of work on it such as new thermal paste and new thermal pads, new cmos battery, new hard drive, new battery. i also did update the bios to 1.17.0. Thinking that maybe, by doing all of this would perhaps bring the machine back to life. it somewhat did, but not quite there.

the symptom that i have is that once windows installed in SAFE mode, the machine will boot fine. i see graphics, it installed windows beautifully. once i boot in normal mode? i get a black screen once i see the window logo, then the fans speed increases slightly. not at full spin

Not entirely sure what is going on with the machine

i did all the self test and diagnostics and it passes in all flying colours. no issues according to the test.

the os installed is windows 10

thinking that it could of been a failed attempt of the bios update by the previous owner, i have downgraded the bios to 1.10.0, still a no go. i did the bios recovery, still a no go. brought back the 1.17.0 and still a no go.

is the machine bricked?

Looking for any feedback or solution to revive this machine as it is so close to work, and yet so far.

booting also into bios or "POST" works beautifully as i have no issues in that area. doing the diagnostics "pressing D while powering up" works, but passes all test.

If it were bricked you would get nothing, not even a POST. The fact that it works fine in Safe Mode would seem to indicate a driver problem or a software conflict or possibly hardware conflict.

Hi @AquaAngel welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

You have made a good start to fix this problem. Please watch the following video for the next step that should provide solution. Copy your personal files just in case they get 'lost', then see if a solution can be found.

Any idea what could cause this issue(s)? cause i did try to change the setting for the discrete graphics and there was no change. i can't even log into windows to change the Video or graphic settings

Thank you kindly sir, Sadly enough, it hasn't solved the problem. followed the step by step in the video, and still can't boot into windows, still have a black screen.

i think i could maybe rule out the software problem or driver since i have no software going, it could be a hardware conflict. is it like a Vbios issues? i think the bios is working as it should. how do we fix a hardware conflict on those laptop? also forgot to mention that even if i plug an external monitor via HDMI, i have no graphics once windows is trying to boot. i just bought an Alienware Graphic Amplifier yesterday and i should get it by the end of this month. not sure if that is relevant, but maybe i could be able to see what is going on if a separate screen is connected via another graphic output device.

i'm willing to try anything on that machine. So if you have other tricks under your sleeves? please do share.

Thank you all

Hi @AquaAngel thank you for sharing update.

You have confirmed that Alienware 17 R4 in Safe mode runs the basic Windows operating system. Please run Malwarebytes Free to fix viruses and other malware when OS has minimal drivers without internet connection. Alienware 17 R4 in Safe mode with Networking: adds network drivers and limited window services. Check Device Manager, did your system function? Alienware 17 R4 in Safe mode with Command prompt: please use diagnostic tools such as check disk. How to Run CHKDSK /F /R /X to Fix Hard Drive Errors Windows 10 - EaseUS. Alienware 17 R4 in Normal mode: did your system function?

Microsoft’s Windows Safe Mode looks simple to use but very effective troubleshooting tool. Using Safe Mode user can avoid hardware or software clashes because most components are not loaded. User gets full control to the Control Panel – Can remove drivers, uninstall software, and stop programs and services. Safe Mode is a place where user can suddenly run typical Windows problems, like a slow or freezing system, random crashes, or dramatic boot issues.

Thanks for the reply.

i have no idea how to go in safe mode in regular windows mode as i was able to be in safe mode when i do the windows 10 installation. i am trying to finish the installation, but i can't see what is going on since the screen is black.

i have no access to the system/control panel or drivers information as the screen is black. running any programs is "as of now" impossible.

Not sure if i try it under an ipv4 or safe boot with network assist could help.

As of now ........ the windows is not at 100% install. it does ask me to restart to finish installation, but again, it goes back into a black screen when it reboots.

How can i finish the installation in safe mode. Cause as of now? i use my USB thumb drive and i get the "DOS mode" and i have several options and i usually select that safe mode for installation, but i have no idea how to go into safe mode after the installation. when i do follow the procedure like you guys posted in the video, after the 3rd attempt? there is an option in your video that i do no have which is to boot in safe mode.

Trust me when i say, i am dealing a stubborn machine.

i just made a video of the actual situation with the machine. i do apologize for the length of it, but i decided to shoot raw for the entire process so that you guys know what is going on. explaining it is kind of hard, seeing it would be better.

Hi @AquaAngel !

I saw the video and I am so sorry you had to record an HOUR of footage to explain your issue.

I recommend trying these things as what you've shown is that all hardware and BIOS related settings are good, but it doesn't boot into Windows via a normal boot unless it's in Safe Mode.

Hold shift when restarting the laptop and try to see if theres an option that lets you troubleshoot the computer via command prompt as an administrator, then I recommend these commands.

sfc /scannow (this works usually but if not then run below commands)

chkdsk /f

chkdsk /r

and that should allow you to fix any corrupt files within windows 10 that prevent you from booting in.

If all that doesn't work, then it is most likely the storage media its stored on (which is highly unlikely).

Just let me know how it goes.
