The coverage on warranty replacement parts is 90 days or the duration of the original system warranty, whichever is longer.
If you are calling about a system still in warranty, whatever you need is covered. For out of warranty, you must pay for a support call and a repair estimate will be generated (see below). And yes, a warranty extension on a system in service is appreciably more expensive than it is at purchase -- just compare the cost of a warranty on a used car with that on a new one; the same applies there.
