x17 R2, HDMI port not working

Hi All, 

My 1 year warranty JUST ran out, and I've been blessed this morning with a faulty HDMI port. My external screen turned off while I was in the middle of using it. I don't know much about computers but I've updated all drivers through the Dell website and it hasn't helped. I've been able to determine that it is the laptop port by testing a few things. 

  • Same cable, same screen, different laptop works fine. 
  • Different cable, same screen, same laptop, doesn't work. 
  • Different cable, different screen, same laptop, doesn't work. 

I'm happy to just pay to get it replaced, but I'm finding the Dell customer support page to be impossible to navigate. Hopefully someone can help :)

Out of warranty repair process:

  1. Computer failure or issue identified.
  2. Check warranty status on the Dell support site (see How do I check my warranty status? ).
  3. If out of warranty, contact Dell Technical Support.
  4. The technician diagnoses the fault over the phone and provide a quote if requested. (see Chargeable Repair section below.)
  5. If you are looking to proceed with quote, reply to the quote acknowledging your acceptance.
  6. Payment method processed.
  7. Repair call booked on acceptance of payment.

Chargeable Repair:

On contacting Dell to arrange a repair that you will be asked for the below information before a quote can be arranged.

  • Service Tag or Express Service Code of the damaged computer.
  • Contact Information (Such as name, telephone, email address).
  • Description of the damage. (includes images of the damage when applicable)
  • Billing Address.
  • Shipping Address - (Parts or Engineer Service).

Have your Customer Number available as this will helps to identify the correct account to bill to if your company has multiple open accounts with Dell.

(Customer numbers usually start with country or region code and then numerical value for example: GBXXXXXXX for the UK)
The customer number can be found on your Dell invoice or by contacting your Account Manager.

The technical support representative advises the most cost effective solution for repair. This can sometimes include Collect and Return services if available in your location. This can often be the best repair option for liquid damage or cases where multiple parts may be required and the full extent of damage cannot easily be diagnosed.

Hi @Zarlakk welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum. A good opening post with diagnostic giving hardware problem, but it could be software problem.

If hardware problem, advocate contact parts-people who offer $100 Dell Laptop Repair | Dell Repair | Laptop Repair | Notebook Service Center (parts-people.com). Parts-people will first diagnose your laptop's problem and contact you with your options. From the description in your opening post it could be that the x17 R2 (1/27/2022) HDMI port should be replaced or the soldered GPU has a fault on the System Board (not user replaceable). If software problem, it could be that the Windows operating system files have been compromised. Please run the Windows System File Checker (SFC) to repair corrupt system files in Windows, followed by Restart (not Shut Down) to save change. If the SFC does not fix problem, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) to repair your Windows image or to modify Windows installation media. Please run the Windows Reliability Monitor, wait for creation of event timeline, look for recurring event, open event to capture faulting application name and Microsoft code. How to use Windows Reliability Monitor to identify software issues | Dell US.  Search internet for similar online event to get fix/solution.
