CX600 and CX3 compatibility with DAE's

I have a couple DAE's, I think they are actually called DAE2, labelled KAE p/n: 005048494 rev:A04 with 5 300GB vault drives and the rest 146GB. Can I boot up a CX600 with these and they are compatible? I dont think I have access to powerlink or emc website info on this. If I get a CX600 I can just configure it from a web browser?

How about with a cx3-40c? I have seen they use something like a DAE4P and have FLARE code 4.xxx , while the CX600 uses only up to  2.19.600.5.45 . Do my KAE boxes have the right FLARE for a CX600 ?

Lastly, would it be possibe to copy this FLARE from a a KAE to a 36GB or 73GB drive and use it with an older box I have, looks like it is an FC5300/5400 ?

Would it be possible to at least log into the CX600 by serial or IP, even if the FLARE version isnt quite right on the DAE, and possibly upgrade it from there or check the version?

I've never heard someone did this before, I guess there should be an error during the boot process.

You can search all the part numbers on EMC PCD site: https://alliance.emc.com/PCDPartners/pl.asp

005048494 is DAE2

after reading this:

DAE2 - the 2Gbit/sec enclosures originally introduced with CX200/400/600 and also used on CX300/500/700 (until DAE2P was introduced). These enclosures support Fibre Channel disk drives at 2Gbit/sec interface speed. These enclosures do not support ATA drives. These enclosures are forward-compatible with CX3-series.

DAE2P - the 2Gbit/sec enclosures introduced with CX300/500/700 to replace usage of DAE2 there. These enclosures support Fibre Channel disk drives at 2Gbit/sec interface speed, with point-to-point connectivity. These enclosures do not support ATA drives, and these enclosures are not supported on CX200/400/600 arrays. These enclosures are forward-compatible with CX3-series.

How would I know what one I have since it only says KAE on it?

I looked up the part number, 005048494, and have run across a couple items that say they are a CX2GDAE-DE , although I have seen some other things with that part # also.

So I am kind of gathering that if something is labelled with a 2 such as CX2 series, DAE2, etc it is referring to CX200 thru CX700 series, and if it is something 3, then it is for the CX3 series, and so on with the CX4.

Refer to EMC KB emc154373 "Which type of Disk Array Enclosure (DAE) can be used in CX4-Series, CX3-Series, and CX-Series storage systems?"

CLARiiON arrays use the following DAE types:

  • DAE2 - The original enclosures used on CX-Series that provide arbitrated loop connectivity to each drive (2 Gbit/sec).
  • DAE2-ATA - The ATA-specific enclosures used on CX-Series.
  • DAE2P - The UltraPoint or "Stiletto" enclosures used on CX-Series that provide point-to-point connectivity to each drive (2 Gbit/sec).
  • DAE3P or DAE4P - The enclosures used on CX3-Series (and CX4-Series) that are 4 Gbit/sec-capable. They also provide point-to-point connectivity, and support the various drive types (FC, LC-FC, ATA) shipped with CX3-Series arrays. These are the only enclosures shipped with new CX3-Series arrays. The ones listed above are supported by CX3-Series arrays, but only by means of a  platform conversion (that is, by converting a CX700 array into a CX3-80 array and so on) or by re-using previously deployed equipment in the field.

Note: The actual enclosure is a DAE3P and the DAE4P designation is the sales model number for the same enclosure.

I tried going through this procedure to turn the system on with 1 CX600 and a DAE2 (4x300GB,7x146GB drives):

I turned on the DAE first, green lights are all on, 2GB/s light on. chassis # set to 0.

connected primary FC interface to BE0 on CX600, connected serial port to another computer and turned on.

The link light on CX600 turns on, the link light on DAE turns solid green, the ones with the numbers flash on 0.

on the serial terminal i get the messages:

          Phoenix serverbios 3...

          EMC bios release 3.60

637K system RAM, 4023M extended RAM, 512K cache RAM....

keyboard error......, ps/2 mouse not installed, hard disk 0,1,2,3: none

          press any key to continue

that doesnt quite make sense. both of these (005047570 and 005048494) have front green/blue lights for 2/4Gb connectivity. the part numbers of the chassis correspond to DPE/DAE2 CX200 thru CX700 series. why would they be capable of 2 or 4gb if they are not for CX3 series?

also one of them says it was originally for a CX300/CX500, which makes me think, since the chassis is the same, if I installed a CX300 SP card, would it not work as a CX300 DPE?

"description: data directory boot service not loaded error!"

The boot loader could not find the correct FLARE partition. You need to get the right Vault disks or re-image the FLARE system.

CX200-700 support 2Gb only that's for sure. You might see 2/4Gb connectivity the front panel, but even you plug a 1/2/4Gb SFP to the FE slot, it will stil run at 2Gb (or 1Gb):

And a SP card is just a processor+memory+mainboard. You can not install a Windows OS on your CPU or maiboard, right? The OS partition is located in the first 5 disks of the first DAE.
