type "chassisname" to get the switch model. If your switch was purchased from EMC, you will need to contact your local EMC team to schedule the upgrade. Firmware upgrade could be non-disruptive but that depends on the type of switch and the current code level. Your EMC contact will help you gather that information.
chassisname doesnt help here as this switch is old model.
i typed the commands bsn - brocade serail number and ssn - soft serial number and supplied these details to vendor HP from whom the switch was purchased and is supported.
Can I request for steps for firmware upgrade, please? I mean some pre-cautionary steps that appllies before and after ( incase firmware download fails) I know that firmwaredownload is the command and ftp server is needed.
you want to make sure your zone information is saved before you begin. On FOS 6.x the command is configUpload, not sure what it use on 5.x or whatever version you are running. Is this switch in the same fabric with other vendor switches ? In FOS 6.x interop mode changed so you need to verify that. Also make sure the firmware you get from HP is in the EMC support matrix.
As the switches are sold and supported by HP I would recommend checking the HP support matrix and following any instructions they provide on doing the upgrades. Just an FYI there is a program to transfer support for Connectrix switches purchased from other vendors to EMC Support.
Here are the steps that I have framed for firmware upgrade process
Take Perform switch firmware upgrade 1)Logon to local server 2)Open the SAN Loader 4.0Utility from Program Files. 3)After login into the SAN Loader give the login credential of switches:- Address:XX.XX.XX.XX Login: Password:********* 4)After successfully login into the switch go to the firmware tab and select firmware>update .Browse to the location where this file is located on local server
I'm not sure about the next steps ....can any one add to these steps above?
the process is described in the help file. if your san loader utility did not come with a help file, send me a private message with your email and i will send it to you. Do gather supportshow/supportsave/configUpload as described in the help file before you begin the upgrade.
Please note switch type 17 is a ''3800 series HP Storage Works HP'' model of switch. That model of switch isn't supported by the emc Connectivity team so you need to go to the relevant vendor for support.
Did you get this worked out? Like others have said on this thread, the 3800 is very old and thus is EOL'd. As an FYI, the last firmware version which Brocade developed and supported on it was FOS v3.2.1c. Of course your particular OEM may have only supported another version. If yo haven't already upgraded, what FOS version are you currently running?
EDIT - Sorry but I just noticed the original post date on this one was from 2010.

Hello,
3800 series switch (which is DS-16B2) is not supported anymore by EMC, since 31st December 2009. Even if this is an HP branded switch.
regards,
Ed

I have a link below which details all the switch models based on the the switch type.
Its a very helpful in determining the switch models.
Brocade switch types versus ASIC, versus FOS family code
https://support.emc.com/kb/33539
Please note switch type 17 is a ''3800 series HP Storage Works HP'' model of switch.
That model of switch isn't supported by the emc Connectivity team so you need to go to the relevant vendor for support.
