Issue about Data Domain implementation/integration into a TSM environment and possibly into SnapProtect (CommVault)

Hi,

I'm from Brazil. This is my first time here.

Our setup:

  • 2x Data Domain system 6800 (6.1.0) (replication is not configured yet).
  • IBM Spectrum Protect formerly known as Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 7.1.3 (two physical server running Linux). We do DRM with Offsite (once per week). Our TSM data is stored on IBM storage LUNs.
  • CommVault Server (VMware VM with Windows 2016);
  • NetApp Storages (A300 and FAS8200) with SnapProtect Solution with almost all features licensed.

Some considerations:

I'm not a Data Domain specialist and I'm definitely not ready to install, implement and administer Data Domain Systems, but our company has acquired Dell/EMC 6800 Data Domain systems and we're planning to integrate it into a TSM environment soon.

For now, I'm reading the admin manual (rev. 3) and doing some administrative tasks with Data Domain System Manager just to explore the interface and concepts.

Issue 1 (DD with TSM):

I already know what MTree is (logical partition), but have some doubts about how to implement it from the viewpoint of TSM administrator.

We are planning to segregate data in MTrees according to TSM Storage Pools (an abstraction that represents a collection of volumes) layout, one to one, or segregate data according to TSM group of nodes (TSM client machines with data affinity/criticality), one to one (group).

1) Does it make sense to you? If not, could you sugest other approach?

For example: one MTree to TSM, one MTree to other backup solution. We plan to send some backup data to TSM using VTL Data Domain.

I think quotas may be useful, but I can't imagine how Snapshots can be useful to TSM.

During my tests, I created an NFS share to store TSM volumes, but I encountered difficulties to mount the export to Linux host (TSM Server). I thought that I could use the "Export Name" (first field from Create NFS Exports form) instead of Directory Path.

2) What does it (Export Name) for?

3) Do you suggest names to MTree objects, NFS Shares etc?

Issue 2 (DD with NetApp SnapProtect):

It is relatively safe and reliable to integrate Data Domain system into NetApp SnapProtect to copy data to Virtual Tape Libraries? NetApp SnapProtect solution support Tape Libraries (via "Media Agent", a separate component).
