I'm having problem with installing the chipset driver along with this BIOS problem!!! I wonder if what you're saying is the case. I posted about this problem here:

I am having the same issue. The only thing I managed to find that may be contributing to the problem is at the link below:

http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/article/product-support/self-support-knowledgebase/software-and-downloads/support-for-meltdown-and-spectre

Apparently, Dell and Intel are having trouble coming up with a patch for these two BIOS problems (Spectre and Meltdown) and are advising we not update our BIOS. They advise we check back to that link to see if anything changes about this situation.

Unrelated:

I'm also having other problems that I just posted about, if anyone else is having that problem at this link below, let me know:

My XPS13 also responds, "BIOS update blocked due to unsupported downgrade", on upgrade attempt. Same as the others, I was notified of this "Optional Update" by the Dell System Assist app.

An update on my earlier post, which won't be of much comfort to those who also had a system crash after this dodgy BIOS upgrade......

I did manage to get to the Windows Repairs options after Windows couldn't automatically repair itself. I tried all the simple options first (simple reboot, startup repair etc) and eventually ended up doing a Windows Reset, which reinstalled Windows, retained all my data, but deleted all my additional apps. I have just spent the better part of 2 days reinstalling everything. On the bright side, this got rid of a lot of **bleep** from the system and I've ended up with more disk space than I've had for a long time.

But it's a real chore to do this - thank god it didn't happen when I was away working and reliant on this laptop !

I'm still getting the BIOS upgrade messages from Support Assist, but I won't be acting on any of them until I know that it's safe (and I'm not away working).

That's the second complete rebuild I've had to do in a month - I had a similar upgrade crash which wiped out my XPS8700 and necessitated a clean reinstall. To this day, I still don't know which upgrade caused the problem.

Good luck to you all with the same problem, and buckets of ordure on Dell (who I usually rate and recommend to anyone) for such a crappy upgrade process.

I am in the same position. Following this thread with interest (and trepidation).

Has anyone experienced black screen after bios dell logo shows during boot?

Thanks for this update and contribution.  Same problem here.  As much as like my XPS 13 am now definitely leaning towards Apple due to these issues and conflicts constantly arising.

Same problem here too, for about a week now, including same error messages (but fortunately no worse issues).

Currently running BIOS 1.6.1, whereas the failed update seems to be labelled 01.00.00 (and with a 2015 release date?). Might be misinterpreting the information, but either way seems vary strange and very disconcerting!

Eagerly awaiting an explanation (Dell Support, please respond!) and/or a solution.

Does Dell actually read these posts or have we simply started a thread to nowhere?

Anyone still under warranty?  If so, can you access support with this problem and report back?

Me too - exactly the same issue

yop. just spent literally up through the whole night to solve XPS's 13 9350 black screen with 1.6.1 BIOS. Tried everything, because one of my customer claimed that "it just happened". And, as far as every single log I managed to pull out of XPS, his words were nothing but truth. Tried everything to make the machine work again, but without luck. Then "BIOS update blocked due to unsupported downgrade" happened, so I was going to reinstall Windows (literally pain in the **bleep** with all the settings and personal data to stay unaffected after the procedure) but thankfully I found this thread before I did so. Anyways, now I am trying to fix this "BIOS update blocked due to unsupported downgrade" **bleep**, but I hope Dell will fix this as soon as possible, cos it's kinda unacceptable for me to release such a machine breaking stuff...
