32GB RAM in an Optiplex 790/990?

I'm curious as to whether anyone has tried 8GB DIMMS in an Optiplex 790/990 to get 32GB total.  I know it is not officially supported, but I thought I would see if anyone has tried the experiment.

Regards,

Ed.

Hi endeitz,

Welcome to the community

The system model optiplex 790 is designed to support only 4 GB memory module in a single slot .

In these two optiplex models each slot supports a maximum DIMM Capacity of 4GB and a total of 16GB in optiplex 790 & 990. This has been tried practically as well. The USFF version of these desktop models which is "Ultra Small Form Factor" supports only 8GB.

I canot speak to the retail memory. These are the 4GB Dell memory sticks validated in the Optiplex 790 SFF =
3R5G7 1333MHz, 512X64, 8K, 240, 2RX8
9V62Y 1333MHz, 512X64, 8K, 240, 2RX8
HWNDG 1333MHz, 512X64, 8K, 240, 2RX8
P382H 1333MHz, 512X64, 8K, 240, 2RX8

I'm actually not even able to use 16GB.  I have the SFF (not the USFF) and I'm only able to use 8GB maximum.  It lets me use either two 2 4GB modules or 4 2GB modules.  If I try going over 8GB, I start to get memory errors and I tested all the modules/memory slots.

Dynomite00000FF,

Are you using Dell memory sticks or retail?

I'm using memory sticks from crucial.com which I have never had an issue with before.  Here are the specs:

Module Size: 4GB

Package: Ballistix 240-pin DIMM

Feature: DDR3 PC3-10600

Specs: DDR3 PC3-10600 • 7-7-7-24 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 64 •

www.crucial.com/.../mpartspecs.aspx

These specs are pretty much the same as those listed on the dell parts upgrade site:

DDR3 SDRAM

DIMM 240-pin

Memory Speed:

1333 MHz ( PC3-10600 )

Memory Speed

1333 MHz ( PC3-10600 )

Data Integrity Check

Non-ECC

RAM Features

Unbuffered

Module Configuration

512 x 64

Yup!  Just did this last week and it boots with 32GB!  Score!  I used crucial ram part number CT102464BA1339.  I would suggest using dell ram with the same specs would work just fine.

No problems with Kingston HyperX KHX1600C10D3B1K2/16G kits on both Optiplex 790 and 7010.  Tested in 32GB configuration on tower models only.  Optiplex 790 also works fine with Kingston Value RAM KVR1333D3N9/8G modules.

I am wondering whether anyone has tried this on a Mini tower. We have a few at work and I'm considering buying some Kingston HyperX Blu 1600mhz for it - 2x8gb - and I am wondering whether anyone has tried it. My plan is to remove the 2x2gb from one tower and put it in another one and then place the new 2x8gb into the empty one.

Hi Dell2k,

Could you give me an update on whether you've had any subsequent issues with the above 32GB RAM configurations on Optiplex 790? Anyone else use this config?

Much appreciated,

Gar

Hi Gar,

I have not had any issues using the listed RAM modules in my previous post with the Optiplex 790.

For other users that might be searching for this issue with regard to the ultra small for factor (USFF).

I have a Optiplex 790 USFF i3 2100 3.1ghz with factory 4gb (2x2gb) and Win 7 Pro-32 bit. I Installed Win Pro 64-bit, then dropped one (1) 8gb DIMM in it. Rebooted without a hiccup and have been using happily ever since. Again, only one (1) 8gb DIMM is occupied. Just for fun, I dropped a spare 4gb DIMM in the other slot, for 12gb total. No problem.

I use a Crucial 8gb 1600 ultra low profile 1.35 volt, BLS8G3D1609ES2LX0. Of course it only runs at 1333, but fine by me.

I did not update the bios from its factory original.

I just wanted to confirm that this part number works like a charm in Dell Optiplex 790 desktop version:

In local Micro Center there was a 2x8GB kit for 84.99 which I got yesterday, installed it today, and without any problems I am running total of 20GB of RAM... machine is super fast!!! so glad it worked out well.

Note that part# BLS8G3D1609ES2LX0 is located on the chip itself.

2x8GB kit part# is BLS2C8G3D1609ES2LX0 - only difference is 2C behind BLS...

Ballistix 2 chips 8G... and the rest is jumble mumble :)

In addition to that with some tower modification I was able to fit following upgrade components:

EVGA GTX260 Core 216 (modified HDD tray frame (cut the chunk of it out :))

Corsair 750W to allow powerhouse to run :) - also modified side cover latch (cut the piece out) and all is working like a charm.

I can finally retire my old desktop Q6600 which I was running on 8GB RAM :) - and yes, that dinosaur is still working like a champ with SSD in it :)

Hi,

I just wanted to confirm. Do you have the Optiplex 790 DT version? If so, isn't the pcie slot on the original mobo limited to a 35W draw?

Can you provide some photos to show your modifications? I'm really interested in upgrading my Optiplex 790 DT so that I may be able to use a better GPU.
