DELL INSPIRON 570 PROCESSOR UPGRADE

I have a dell inspiron 570 with a 04GJJT motherboard and a 300w power supply. I would like to upgrade to a AMD phenom II x4 965. I cant find any information on if my computer can handle this processor.

I do have the latest A06 bios update and latest chipset update

Hi Yodawg,

The AMD Phenom II x4 965 processor will be compatible with this computer model. The power supply that’s already installed in the computer will be compatible.

Note: Dell does not recommend processor upgrades. However changing the factory configuration in the computer may affect the hardware warranty.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Thank you Very much. I could honestly care less about the warranty haha, but one more thing. If i get that processor would i have trouble cooling it?

Hi Yodawg,

Thank you for your quick response. There are two types of heat sink available for this model: 95w and 65w. The system’s fan assembly is standard; however you can use the 95w heat sink for better cooling and performance.

Glad to assist.

Hello mate

I think you have to look at this post for recommendations! Someone is ahead of you.

I am very surprised by Dell Leason stating that 965 BE is compatible. In Dell statements compatible means supported by warranty,  965 is not, however it was tested and working by my and Ocmusicjunkie - so we can not claim Dell warranty on our Ispirons....

Anyway, I am impressed and shocked by your statement, Appu S, well times changing I guess.

what do you mean?

what do you mean?

Well, until now none of Dell people were saying that 965 BE is compatible - Dell counts compatible configurations, the ones which been tested by Dell engineers. So far 965 BE is installed (Inspiron 570) on about 3 or 4 machines, I was first, OCMusicJunkie second, and a few more after us. So basically 965 BE is tested by users only, also, placing processors not tested by Dell (means not recommended by Dell) will void the warranty, and so on, and so on - that is why  I was surprised by Dell Leason statement, oh well time changes, I guess.

And if you meant regarding link provided, this link leads to the same discussion as here, so you can pick up necessary info there.

I think Dell will still be right to void the warranty of any future upgraded machines- at least the ones returned as having a X4 965 melted through the motherboard once someone keeps the stock heatsink. ;)

yodawg,

The Dell warranty only covers the hardware we shipped in the system. So if you add other non-validated hardware and the system has issues, we will not troubleshoot until you remove the other hardware and reinstall our shipped hardware. Now, let's say you add a CPU which bricks the motherboard, we are not going to cover that motherboard. The AMD 965 was not validated by Dell. These are the fastest CPUs validated by Dell on this PC model -
5H0HC AMD Phenom 945,3.0,512X4KB,4C,C3
DH25P AMD Phenom 945,3.0,512X4KB,4C,C3
XN0W4 AMD Phenom 850,3.3,512X4,4C,C3
9NMX9 AMD Phenom X3 450,3.2,512X3KB,3C,C3
R0J7F AMD Phenom X4 645,3.1,512X4KB,4C,C3
GH8FN AMD Phenom X2 260,3.2,1MX2,2C,C3

So Dell-Appu S is saying that it will work (based on customers reporting that it does), but our hardware warranty does not cover the CPU nor would we cover damage done to our hardware by adding the non-validated CPU.

I think it's only fair once we start removing sensitive, vital components from the system that we forfeit the ability to claim warranty coverage unless some unrelated failure occurs. I mean if my factory HDD flat dies mid-warranty I dont think a cpu should be faulted, but just about everything else on the motherboard would be hard to call a manufacturing defect if it failed after doubling the psu output and running a 125w processor on a 95w rated board that came with a 65w chip. I just hope that bios or OS issues that are hardware neutral in nature will still be addressed if they ever come up.

Me or Kisianik would be doing the nerd equivalent to bringing the Honda dealer our Civic after we gutted to install a turbo 3-liter engine and flipped the drive wheels to the rear, then saying "clinked has a check engine light to fix!" lol

This is exactly what I was trying to say regarding Dell-Appu S statement, thanks Chris for showing up.

This is a joke, or not - do not throw away your original processor, after you, yodawg, burn your original motherboard, install your old processor from Dell and call Dell, just say that your fan died and original processor overheated, LOL.

You got 965 BE already? Yes it will work,  next you will have to get Deepcool ICEEDGE 400 XT - as the only one efficient 92 mm cooler for your processor, installation of this cooler will require most likely removal of Dell motherboard backplate! OCMusicJunkie used this on his Inspiron, I cannot comment on mountings. When time come to removing backplate (if necessary), post it here, I will tell you how to do it an easy way!

I was also looking at another cooler that has been said to fit in the inspiron 570

www.bestbuy.com/.../9462609.p

skuId=9462609&st=570%20Rocketfish%20High%20Performance%20CPU%20Fan&cp=1&lp=2

I did buy the AMD phenom II 965, I have no intentions of overclocking and it works in my computer but It gets very hot like above 60c. The heatsink in the link above will fit in the inspiron 570 but im not very familiar on that subject so im not 100% sure. Its much easier for me to get the rocket fish because i ca pick it up tomorrow but if you don't think it will work i will go with your recommendation and assistance. Your help is very appreciated.

If at all possible, pass on the Rocketfish cooler. If you already have it purchased, it's your call if you want to try it or take it back. We're all kind of shooting from the hip and guessing at what coolers will fit the factory case and still be effective, beyond the couple we've tried out already. I would caution two things with the one from Bestbuy- first, it uses clips and not screws, so the mounting may be a bit "creative" to make work, since the stock bracket on our board is the socket 775 pattern with threaded anchor points to hold the cooler in place with screws (not clips like many socket 775 coolers). Second, it takes a really effective cooler with some good thermal paste to keep the temps reasonable. Even if it *looks* like another model that has done a good job, all it would take is a bottom plate that isn't perfectly flat and smooth, or which doesn't have good contact between the heatpipes and the mounting plate, and it would be no better than stock. If you don't want to take the chance of having to swap multiple heatsink setups trying to find one that works, I'd say get something like the IceEdge 400 that has been proven to work, or the  CNPS5X Performa 92mm which is a great company and clearly a design that would work. Also, I'd suggest getting some Arctic Silver thermal paste.

I just realized this afternoon that I may have to move up into the Evo 212 Plus cooler with a push/pull setup now that I'm overclocked to 4.3ghz. I was ripping movies from DVD so I could transfer the files to my tablet and was enjoying how fast it was working- then I realized the CPU had been running near 100% for an hour and had the temp pegged at 59.5C. LOL
