Power supply on a Studio 540
Hello friends...
I recently attempted to upgrade the power supply on my Dell Studio 540, with no success. Everything fit and would plug in, and the fans and CD drive worked, but the computer didn't boot, and the monitor nor the mouse/keyboard received any signal. The tech guy at the place I bought the PSU had no clue why it didn't work, as the power supply worked fine on another computer, just not mine. The only possibility they could think of was that dell was still doing something to their motherboards so that only dell PSUs would work.
Is dell actually still doing this? On the Studio 540? The manual mentioned nothing of this, and even provides step-by-step instructions on how to replace the power supply. Are dell's power supplies on the Studio 540 only replaceable by their own?
Thanks!

Hello Bev,
Thanks for the quick respond.
Yes, the power supply is an upgrade, we bought it simply because we need it to power a new graphic card.
The power button LED is a solid amber.
Now I am using a discrete PCIe video card(GTX 570) that I bought last week as an upgrade for the previous Geforce 9800.
I've checked all the cables, connectors, memories, I believe they are all securely connected.
Yes, I did bent the 4-pin section aside. PS. I did read the some of the other comments that you posted on the other threads.

Was the power supply an upgrade, or was there an issue with the 540 prior to replacing the PSU?
Are there any 'Beeps'?
Is the power butoon LED,a solid amber, or a blinking amber?
The Studio 540 Troubleshooter is HERE
Are you using a discrete PCIe video card, or the integrated graphics?
Have you checked that that all the cables/connectors, memory modules, etc, are properly connected.
The Corsair 750TX has a 12v EPS 4/8 power connector, this needs to be divided into 2 x 4-pin connectors and one 4-pin section must be connected to the motherboard's 4-pin [ATX_CPU] connector.

Yes, you are right.
Have you seen any 500-750W power supply units that are compatible with dell 540 MT? If convenient, please provide the purchase link.
Thanks,
Gary

A solid amber LED indicates 'The computer has a power problem or an internal device malfunction'.
By checking the all the power and data cables, this means removing and reseating all the connectors.
A silly question, I believe that the GTX 570 has two supplementary PCIe power connectors, they are connected to the wiring harness.

It has been reported [in this thread] that Cooler Master PSU's will work in the Studio 540
The following 750w unit has the 6-pin PCIe power connectors required by the video card,

The following is a 720w modular power supply, using a modular unit can help with the cable clutter inside the case.

As a point of interest, a member reported, that a Corsair HX 620W Modular PSU work fine in their Studio 540 Mini-Tower,

Bev,
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help.
Please take a look of this old thread:
en.community.dell.com/.../19410838.aspx
I have a feeling that I should go with the old corsair psus, as the new ones have ATX12V 2.31 output, even it says that it's backward compatible to the old ATX12V 2.2 or 2.01 but it seems won't work on my case. I have checked the links you just posted and I found that the ones that worked were older versions, which had ATX 12V 2.2(backward compatible with 2.01) or 2.01.
One more question: Is 620 W enough to power up the system?

Hi everyone,
The power supply on my Dell Studio 540 MT also out recently.
Just wanted to let people know that it was successfully replaced by a Cooler Master Extreme2 625W Power Supply. Link:
www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php
Installation was rather easy and the price was very affordable (Even cheaper than the 350W replacement part Dell tries to sell you).
Hope this helps.
