While it may be possible to run 3-way sli on this machine, the connector that is needed would be proprietary because the third slot is NOT equidistant from the top two. Regardlessly, 3 way sli will be obsolete in a month when the 9800gx2s come out and will be even less desirable once the g100 cores come out.

Fixed. And by obsolete I meant that the current 8800 will not be useful as a 3-way solution

I am not so sure about obsolete just yet though. The 9800 GX2 is expected to have a boost of 30% over the ultra so as far as obsolete three way sli I am not sure. That is also assuming that the 9800 GX2 does not flop such as the 7900 GX2 did. I believe the 9800 GTX set to come out later this year will also have the ability for three way sli as well. So I still think three way sli is not yet out of the competition.
